So i put in a request to upgrade from 384K to 4096K, with telkom, how long does it take to be re-synced? Does a Technician have to actually go to the exchange and change it physically, or is it merely a software switch?

Normally it is pretty fast (a few hours). BUT...

If your exchange has multiple DSLAMs and some are the newer types that can handle 10/12mbps, then it might entail a physical jumper change.

Reason? afaik Telkom have been moving all the 384 users off the newer DSLAMs and onto the older DSLAMs to make the faster ports available for the (current) 4096 users who will more than likely be bumped up to 10mbps soon. (imminent :o).

Hmmm, Well I will shoot home at lunchtime and check if it's been done yet!
I'll be so stoked if it has!

If the port you're on is already capable of up-to 4mbps, then it can happen instantly, it's a simple control panel change for the telkom techies while you're on the phone with them.

On the other hand as moggie mentioned, if you're on a DSLAM circuit that isn't equipped for it, it'll require a physical cable swap in the exchange.
Once that's been done though changing your speed happens while you're on the phone, and unless you're on contract (dobroadband or another contract) with Telkom, you can change your speed as often as you want, and they even afford you the luxury of only charging you (per speed) for how much of a month you actually had it.

In our case we stepped down from 4mbps to 384kbps on the 28th, and we were billed less than our full amount for the 4mbps for that month and the price of the 384kbps at 3 out of 31 days.
Of the things I'd experienced with Telkom I found this to be the best to date (and we've had our fair share of epic grief with them).

Well looks like no change has been made as yet;

Still syncing @ 384 at the moment :-( but will hopefully be back up tonight.

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4796 1312
Rate (Kbps): 384 127

It reads that it can achieve up to in excess of 4mbps; it looks like your account may be your limiting factor. What DSL account are you using?

I'm on uncapped. I went with SAINET 10Gb Uncapped after hours. as far as i'm aware it's 4Mb during the day for 10Gb of data, then it's capped. but after hours it's 4mb uncapped.

May be worth shooting off a mail to your ISP to make sure the account is working as intended and that they haven't for some silly reason given you an inferior account?
Alternatively, of course, you ought to have a reference number for your line upgrade and could query the status; make sure it's 'activated to be used as a 4mbps line' etc.

it is possible that SAINET haven't updated their side, and is still seeing me as being on a 384k liine? or is it automatic on the ISP's side? As i think telkom changed it whilst i was at home, i remember the first time i checked the attainable rate was +- 21000 and then after reboot it went to 4796.
Any ideas?
Should i fone the ISP?

Oh really? OK that is pretty shweet! I don't really mind about been throttled during the day. I 99.99% of the time only use it after hours!
Thanks for the info nanonyous!

Actually, no, what it's doing is normal:

You're throttled to 384kbps during office hours then 4mbps after-hours. Your line upgrade has been completed :P

They don't change the line connections speed only telkom can do that you will just be throttled during the day your modem will still say connected at 4096

I upgraded my line to 4meg a while ago and it took a few days so just keep calling them and asking them what the status and escilate if possible you will eventually be upspead

Thought that too, cause it should be syncing higher. Hmmm!
Well Still I have to be 100% honest here, when i was on MWEB i tried doing a PS3 update from the console, and it always failed.
Today i did it at lunchtime and it got to 68% before i had to leave for work. So that's impressive. I'll be stoked if it's completed when i get home.

does anyone know if you can check online if the upgrade has occured? like in the telkom client portal?

No, but accounts can be limited to X speed, and the connection, while performing the handshake for PPPoE, can indicate what speeds (up/down) it's able to run at, if I'm not mistaken.
That would be the indicator for him on his router where the router claims it can achieve in excess of 4mbps down, 1.5mbps up, but his actual connection (the running account, perhaps?) is only 384kbps down, 127kbps up (127kbps according to his router, not me).

In any event, his line looks to be upgraded to 4mbit already.

No, he hasn't been upgraded. It's syncing at 384, router calculates the maximum possible rate given the SNR and attenuation. Just some extra info.

Secondly, that SNR for downlink, 14.4 dB? If it indeed is that then no way in hell you will have reliable 4mbit mate. Lots of drops imminent.

Some of these routers now days tell you how much your line can achieve I don't know wether it gets this from the DSLAM or its some internal calculation it does according to the S/N ratio and Line attinuation

The link speed is what you are looking for that should never change if that had to change dialy that would mean your port would have to be reset and your line would go down for about 30 seconds to a minute then the then it would sync to the right speed

Any speed limitations from a ISP will be done on there said not on the exchange side
