Upgrading to 2Mbps (Currently on 1Mbps)

Hi Forum,
Can you please give me some insight.
Apologies if there is a thread for this but I'm lost.

We currently have 1Mbps uncapped through Telkom and are paying R199 for uncapped data through Mweb.
If I go on the Telkom site , I see the 'Fast ADSL' lowest package starts at 2Mbps?

Is 2Mbps the entry level for adsl now or is 1mbps still correct?
I'd like to upgrade to 2Mbps as my room mate has been killing the line with his lame torrents :(
I can barely do any browsing or streaming when his torrents are abusing the speeds.
I've checked on Mwebs site and the data for 2mbps is still R199 a month.

Will it just be a case of calling Telkom and requesting for the upgrade to 2mbps?
Or can you suggest a package that includes line rental in the deal that can save us .

Telkom ditched 1mbps in 2013 already. The slowest you get is 2mbps.

Telkom isn't the one holding you back - it's Mweb. You need to phone Mweb and upgrade to a 2mbps package.

Wow ok thanks. We are paying the R199 through Mweb and on their site it shows for 2Mbps.
So it should just be a case of them enabling the 2mbps ?
I feel robbed now :( :cry:
 
Just so you know, upgrading your line speed is not going to solve the problem with your roommate hogging your bandwidth with torrents. All that's going to happen is that his torrents will download quicker and you will still sit with the same problem. What you really need is a router that can allow you to automatically prioritise traffic according to whatever priority you want. For example, you could tell the router to make http and email traffic the highest priority and make torrent downloads the lowest priority. That way your browsing will not be affected by your roommates torrents because the router will always give other traffic priority over the torrent downloads.

Just be aware that the mweb 1mbps premium line has a threshold of 100GB, whereas, the 2mbps home line account has a threshold of 70GB.
You will be throttled at 70Gb with the 2Mbps home line account (R199).

Thanks man, yeah I have this software ready to limit 1MBPS per laptop at our house.

I'm still stuck on 1MBPS!
Telkom have advised that 2mbps should be enabled .
Mweb have told us they've enabled it and all we had to do was 'reset the router'.
I've reset enough times but speedtest.net still only shows the speed at 1mbps .
Is there anything else you could advise on ? I'm lost and frustrated :(

I can have a look at what speed your line is syncing at if you would like.
