Would there be any sense in upgrading from a 6600 GT 128mb to a 6800 GS 256mb ?

Or will it just be a waste of money.

I am thinking no sense at all. but am not sure. hence the question.

At the moment if you have a 6600GT PCI-e to upgrade to a 6800 GS would just be stupid, wait a while prices will drop and soon you will be able to buy a 7800 for the same price.

2 months time whole bunch of new releases....I expect the prices of a 7800GT to keep dropping steadily and to decrease heavily when the new range comes out late feb/march.....
Just wait a bit longer and the time will be right to hit the sweetspot,a GTX might(might)even be in range.

ATM You would be stupid to do any upgrades. The new line of NVidia Cards will be out soon like ED said and on the CPU front AMD will launch socket M2 as well. The smartest move would be to wait till all the new tech is out and then upgrade just below top of the line. You will save a lot because Top of the line is always at some silly premium.

Dont know what you will be able to get at the 6800GS's price in say 2 months but you can be sure it will be quite a bit faster.

Sadly the 6800GS wont be around for much longer. I am not 100% sure if this is accurate but I read somewhere 6800GS production will stop sometime after Feb.

Person, you got any info on when the 6800GS will no longer be produced?

will adding a 7800 GT to the system below boost gaming performance alot or will it need a better processor to reach full potential.

AMD 64 3000 (939)
6600 GT 128mb
1 gig ram (non dual channel)
win xp, 120gig hdd etc. etc.

two words:EYE CANDY
hehe
A 7800 gt will be a large improvement as in you will be able to run games smoothly at full detail pretty much at a good high res with a good bunch of AA...
As Angellus said, the new highrange is always the most expensive, but the 2nd inline range is always more than good enough .
Angellus:Production ends at the end of Q1
The new top of the range card is always for ppl that just have to have it or reallllly really need it and can afford it.

where can i get more info on upcoming releases?

Not enough info on it yet mate....
They talking 700mHz on the core stock...but the pricing will be rediculous..
If you want a easy 15 percent increase in eye candy and performance in gaming I can show you how to up the clocks on your card, maybe tie you over till you splash out on your next card.it's real easy.

Well as ED said chucking a 7800GT into that system will give it a healthy boost. You will be able to run slightly higher res but much higher detail. A faster CPU will also make a noticable difference. But not as much as the GFX card.
