So who is thinking of upgrading their Xbox360 hard drives? Since you can install games to your hd now?

Great plan by Microsoft, 'Who would need to install a game to the HD, you just put in your DVD and play', oops, maybe we need more space for our games and a DVD is getting to small. It won't be long when the games would have to be installed on the hd's to run.

And who needs more than 20Gig, even though much bigger Hd's were available at that time to release with the Xbox360. Good plan, Micro$oft, now you can charge all your loyal supporters more money for HD's, especially since they must buy your HD's. oh and R1500 for a 160 HD is not a rip off.

Edit: Oh lets not make it easy for the user to transfer his data from the old HD to the new. Let's make him buy more stuff to enable him to do it.

Can you put in a non-MS hdd into the xbox (and I'm sure youd need to void warranty or what have you, but still... the question remains)

Smokey - there's a hack but officially no.

@Benotik, if you buy the 120Gb drive it comes with a transfer cable.

Installs will never be mandatory they can't do it, there are millions of Arcades out there with 256 and 512Mb MU's and they're about to sell millions more.

As for shipping with 20Gb drives - so did the PS3. It's a matter of cost effectiveness at launch trying to reduce costs of a subsidized item. That's business.

@doobiwan, isn't Microsoft going on some campaign to have specials on HD's to try and get Arcade people to buy HD's? (Might be wrong)

Yes, PS3 did something similar, but you can change it with just about any make/size HD and you don't need special cables, etc.

There is currently a program for core/arcade users to buy old the old 20gig hdds M$ have left. Then when installs are needed they can say that they gave people a chance.

I love the way how pretty much every 13373R-than-thou tech-junkie disses Microsoft, while still using as many of their products as possible and secretly wishing that they could actually afford to buy their products* legally.

* I'm not only referring to software here...

Not in South Africa... :(

Actually, yes in South Africa.

It's not availalbe yet because we technically don't form part of the "Live roll-out," but games will start shipping with the NXE and as such MS are obligated to upgrade core Users, which they have already committed to, it's just a matter of when.

So you don't have anything against M$? You don;t think that it is rightfully used? Personally, I don't give two tosses about the Xbox, M$ is still the devil - no matter how much they win me over with their console. If you want to defend someone, defend MSGS instead of the Redmond behemoth itself.

Shame on you for hurting a $ony fanboi's feelings.

Does said hack incapacitate the console in the same way as installing a mod-chip would?

I don't think so, you have to use the exact same type of Drive as MS use (it's a specific WD one) and flash the drive to the same firmware. 'm sure it invalidates your warranty, but worst case scenario you would probably be able to go back to the 20 uninjured.

But let me stress I have never tried this, and i don't recommend it.

so if you found a specific WD and flashed it (only get a 340 version) you would be able to use it? without being banned from live?
