have a mate that has downloaded about 180 GB a month on a 3gb telkom account.

he downloads from local sites and FTP,torrents :D

hows that for impressive.
Will be testing soon with my adsl.

PS. he holds on of the records for most downloaded in 1 month. somewhere in the region of 200GB

Might i add that this has been used as a testing phase for a discussing in dealing with the bandwidth issue around telkoms saga.!!!!
Still waiting for a reply. (more like i gave up long ago waiting)

Sure he wasnt sharing his account with a few mates?

Yes, one 512 line cannot do 200GB. I am sure one can do a lot better by getting 100 people to download on the same account, but I guess that would only work if one knows 99 *****s with ADSL.

Just a side note: I'm sure that 200GB was sending & receiving.
When doing p2p your sending is the same (if not sometimes more) than the receiving...
Not that i would know anything about that... Just saying.... No one needs to come bite my head off because of that...

I'm only gonna have a measly 3GB cap and I'm gonna do my best to get as much out of it as I can, I don't really care about anyone else...
So hhmmm WTF are you doing here on these forums! Am I mistaken in thinking that these forums where started by RPM to help the community.. if you dont care about anyone but yourself.. Please take a long walk off of a short pier..

I hope you never get ADSL.. Hows that for only thinking about yourself!

IMHO from reading all that has been said I think we should not be killing each other we should be united in fighting the local cap thing. My backup has always been download a few stuff from were ever, when cap is reached i will still be able to game locally check my mail upload assignments( i am @ varsity). I also think that by abusing a system (no mater how crappy it is!) you are not helping the cause! Telkom is a company and any company's main gaol in the end is to make profit, to make profit you minimize costs(to you as the company) and maximize rates to end user, in such a fashion as to still be competitive ( monopoly well, well! ). So they never did cap our local if they do this now we are screwed or well i know i will be!!

I guess the bottom line is we should make sure we know everything about the local cap thing, we all know how telkom can speak in circles! I still can't really see how they can cap local! Telkom has always argued that we are cap internationally because of the high cost of international bandwith, local bandwith as I understand it is supose to be free for telkom anyway, it is like a lan type enviroment, we don't pass trhough any submarine cable or sat connection to get local bandwith!

And don't abuse just for the sake of abusing. If you raelly can justify downloading 100+gig a month then go ahead but if you know you are downloading crap then don't do it!:)

agreed...
no need for such massive downloads...
unless u a warez monkey...
30gb is sufficient for me, when they "eventually' come install ny adsl!!!

I wonder what the guys in sweden do with their 10/100 Mbps connections....in the future the amount dl'ed shouldn't matter, just imagine streaming a 2 hour movie at 4Mbps...theoretically that roughly equals 3.5GB.

good point

what are these 1,2,4,8,24meg :) pipes used for ?
email and chatter?...................I dont think so:)

I cant believe the bitchin that goes on in this forum. I have a 30GB account with AYCE, and to be honest, its not really enough. I would beh appy with double that, and yes, i do use and want everything i download.

As far as people going over there cap every month, good for them. Telkom is practically raping every single person in this country in multiple ways and i think everyone deserves a little back. An eye for eye. Telkom have no leg to stand on spinning their web of deciet and lies and thinking we are just gonna take it like good little slaves. As we all know, we are paying outrageous prices for a half-assed service that is unheard of anywhere else in the worlds.

Stop the fighting with each other, focus on the enemy.

I thought 30 gigs would be more than enough on my 192 DSL - one movie per day + browsing, IRC etc.. But because of the nature of apps such as BitTorrent or DC++, you upload like 50 - 80 % of what u download. So when u download a 700 Mb movie, you upload like 400 megs with that.

Yesterday i did a total of 1.55 gigs of data transfer. Gonna have to cut back so that I dont hit my cap (I hate being capped!) I think a 50 + gig account would be enough.

For all the people complaining about "abuse" - the whole point of a broadband connection is to transfer large amounts of data. Telkom implements a 3 gig cap which is ridiculous - thats like DSTV saying you have access to 120 different channels - but you can only watch 1 hour per day.

If some people do 100 gigs + a month - who cares - they are in a minority anyway, and are not the reason for telkom implementing caps in the first place. And if telkom has a proper backbone in place, it wouldnt affect anyone if other people download all day. We are downloading at 512 max - OOOOOOOH! What about countries with 24Mbit DSL uncapped DSL connections? Can you imagine the strain a few hundred of those put on a network?
