Upload slows Download down...or so I thought

I've been complaining alot about how as soon as upload of any form or speed starts, your download goes to ****.
Well, after playing around this weekend, and I think I've figured out why this happens.

Since sentech switched off the Fourways Golfpark tower I've been struggling to get a decent signal. I use PPPOE and Linux, so I can only tell you, my signal used to be 4 lights, after the switchoff it was 1-2 lights.

I would get nice 30KB/s download speeds (Multithreaded). The second I start an upload. My 30KB/s download would go down to 1-2KB/s and the upload won't be much faster either.

So anyways, while this situation was occuring this weekend, I decided to try and find a better signal. Moved the pringles can around a bit, angled it up. Signal went from 2 to 3 and BOOM. Upload was crusing at 30KB/s and so was the Downloads!!!!!

My best guess is, that the modem's output power is not good enough to deliver a decent upstream at low signal levels. The lack of bandwidth in the upstream would cause the downstream to suffer when an upload is going, because the ACK packets can't be delivered to the remote site fast enough. And from the looks of it, with my weak signal my upstream was stuck at something like 24-32K

Hi nonroker. Are you sure this wasn't just one of Sentech's usual weird psychosis-inducing temporary anomalies? You know those infrequent little bursts of perfect speed you get just to give you a moment's hope and then just when you think you've got it figured out or Sentech has finally fixed something it all goes for a ball of sh*t again?

BTW, do you get timeouts on protocols like irc, nntp and other non-standard custom stuff (e.g. Yahoo games on port 11999)? Starting a few weeks ago this started to happen with me and some others are also starting to report similar occurrences. Not just slow speeds, but an okay connection for about 3 minutes and then suddenly nothing, until your app times out??

Nope, it's been solid for the last 24h
I don't time out on IRC anymore. I used to when I start an upload.
It was really bad. I wouldn't dare to open a torrent because the connection would just become completely useless as soon as the torrent starts uploading. This is no more the case after moving the modem/pringles can.

nonroker, I have the same upload/download speed problem, as soon as an upload start my download goes to fcukall, I have 29% signal strenght and all four lights are on, I have direct line of sight to 5 towers, 1 of which (the strongest signal) is Radiokop, the centre of all internet connections re: Sentech. So where you hop a couple of times to get there, I connect there in 1 hop.

That doesn't help at all... trust me... you can have an antenna stuck up your arse and it won't make a difference

you can use a proggie called 'NetLimiter' to limit your specific application's upload speed.

in fact, more you upload, the slower download speed it becomes.

noone, it might be the signal the tower gets from you that's weak. Try pointing a directional antenna straight at a tower..even if your signal is maybe worse that aiming 7 degrees to the left or right.

You have a laptop right? Why not drive out to a tower and test the theory. I would, but I have no laptop []
