uPnP not staying selected / ticked. Netgear

Hi all , I need help please...

I need to turn UPnP on in my router settings in order to enjoy my Chromecast. I have a Netgear N300.

When I go into settings (Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> UPnP) and I select / tick the 'Turn UPnP on' tickbox, and hit apply, the router reboots, but returns with the box unticked.

No joy with the Chromecast yet.

Any ideas? An internet search doesn't reveal anyone with the same issue...
 
uPnP is really not a good idea, ever.

At a very basic level it assists in network auto discovery. Allows devices to make their presence known on the network, and what services they provide.

That includes routers, TV's media centers, etc. Saves a hell of a lot of trouble.It also helps with NAT traversal.

Bonjour services from apple are very similar. I would recommend running bonjour and upnp on your home networks. A lot of devices support either/both. You can install bonjour without installing itunes
 
I have avahi running on my router so I'm good thanks.

Would UPnP on your firewall not be a bit moronic, as it allows a potentially compromised machine to freely open connections to the Internet?
 
Everyone to his own. Feel free to explain to the OP how to run avahi on his router

The entire point is that uPNP makes the life of "normal" people easier by not requiring them to understand or implement port forwarding and firewall rules.

So if you want to be hardcore and do It all manually by all means enjoy yourself.

But if you want stuff to just work in a painless fashion and on your home network switch on upnp.

Corporate environment is a whole different story for obvious reasons.
 
So no joy yet...is there a particular way I can set up the router to allow the Chromecast without UPnP? Sorry for noob question...
 
Don't worry all - suddenly worked on the 3rd PC I logged into the router settings with. Not sure why this worked. Thanks for everyone's input... :)

Same browser as the other PCs?

Same browser? Was going to suggest using a different browser type. Had a d-link that only used to work on IE
