Uproar over NY Arabic school

Just as a matter of interest here.

If you have spent your entire educational experience in a French/Portchie/Zulu speaking school, while living in majority english speaking country, how can you be expected to communicate effectively with fellow workers (if that is you manage to find a job outside of the family business)? How can you be expected to perform at varsity level where classes and texts are all in english?

Don't you think it's limiting?

It probably is - but then I guess if you want to limit yourself that way, it's you that has to live with the consequences...

I wouldn't be against the state *also* insisting that an official language or lingua franca be taught on top of any other languages the students may be exposed to.

Actually there's a sizable percentage of people that speak Spanish as their primary language (12%), and that's ignoring the areas of America (small, granted), where people don't speak english at all, but instead speak their own versions of German and so forth.

So when does a number of primary speakers of a certain langauge become enough to grant it a status as an official language?

English is primary language used in schools, business, government and social entertainment. If you want to say something formal in America you say it in English

If you pay taxes and the government grants state education, then as a tax payer and a member of society you have a say in what kind of education you get.

Yeah and what about the other taxpayers. They are paying for you to learn about some foreign culture when those resources could be used for more productively.

So, while I may not approve of the way the Amish live their life, they do collectively have a right to receive an education from the state which addresses their lifestyle (because they pay taxes).

No they don't because somebody else is paying for it with their tax money. If they want to teach their own lifestyle they must fund it themselves privately. The state will provide the standered education given to all and if they want to take it further they can but it comes out of their pocket not some other guys from miles away.

It's the duty of the state, in providing education and charging taxes for this purpose, to give the population the education it desires. If a certain section of the population wants a different education to the majority, that is their prerogative.

Yeah and they must then fund it because you can't expect the state to fund every Tom, Dick and Harry's own personal cultural heritage. They are all citizens of the state sharing common values, culture and history. Hence they all receive the common education in those.

If a German asks a fellow German a formal question( say a debate in parliament) he doesn't speak English or Spanish does he Why? because German is the 'official' language. So when an American asks another American a formal question he doesn’t speak German or Spanish.
