There is a UPS system advertised on page 28 of the October TV guide by a company called UPSDirect. I gave them a call and they reckon for R1845 I can get the Inverex 500-1 which will run a PC for 6-8 hours.

Now, from my experience the best I could ever get out of any low priced UPS was around 30 minutes.

Has anyone tried this unit? Does it really give 6-8 hours to a PC?

What's its KVa rating?

The lower the KVa, the shorter the standby time. El-cheapo UPS'es have 250KVa, but the most expensive eye-watering ones have higher ratings.

It all depends on what you want to run, and how long you want to run things... and make sure it's generator-compatible.

You probably mean 250va, 250kva is about 375 amps!!!!!

I've found a 1kva gives about that, depending how many PC's you have on it. That's on logic controlers though...

I got mine from UPS direct.

I was told that the serial cable and software was extra and I would have to either pick it up or pay to have it sent to me. Is that normal?

I have only ever bought one UPS and the software and cable were included - it was a cheapo for R350 and only lasted +- 20 to 30 minutes.

Which model did you buy? what is the application? does it deliver as promised?

To be honest I have no idea what model it is. I paid about R500 for it.

It powers my 400w power supply and LCD for about 25mins. Only reason I have it is to save my work and games! Have had it for about 8 months now. So ja it works great. Just pissed off about them trying to make an extra R100 by removing the cable and software from the box! buggers.

I know UPS Direct, the inverex is not a real UPS, it is meant for home appliances, like tvs, lights etc ... it cannot communicate to a PC either and it doesn't protect your PC at all ...

probably it will last couple of hours on a very low power PC, depends on the battery pack

I asked if I can connect a UPS between a PC and an inverex, but apparently I can't, as the power that the inverex generates is not very much withing the normal ranges, if you connect a UPS past it, the UPS will kick in immediately and not bother to use the inverex power as it is not suitable according to a standard UPS requirements ...

for about R2K you can get a proper 2000 VA UPS (from UPS Direct again) which even though will last only about an hour, has far more functionality than an inverex and it is far more reliable

A 1KVA doesnt even run a fax machine for half an hour, let alone a PC for 6- 8 hours, i know because i have timed it while the power was out at a client, couldnt do much else without power lol

I have a 600VA unit on my PC, and it holds the PC up for 5 minutes. That seems to be typical; I have no idea how these guys get 20-30 min on 400 or 600VA units.

I've got a 600VA Sahara offline UPS (+-R350) runs the pc for 5-8 min.
Then i have a 1KVA Line-interactive UPS i bought second hand. (Retails for about +-R2500) Have'nt really used it, cause our power fluxuates to much and the damm ups is constantly switching to backup mode. Should give 15-25min on 1 pc.

To get 6-8H from a ups you need something in the region of a 2KVA-5KVA UPS. Not even sure if they'll do it.

How does it react when the battery is flat? Does it treat the PC like a power cut? Cos i'm thinking of getting one and the idea is to save the wear and tear on the pc with all these cuts. Lots of time it is a quick one, like 1 min.
