Hi I'm looking at purchasing an UPS for my PC.
Current ones I'm looking at are:

or
http://www.comx-computers.co.za/computer-store-specifications.php?products=9515

Now what bugs me about both of these are the interface between the pc and the ups. It looks like some sort of
serial cable. I dont have any serial connectors on the back of my pc. Should I rather be looking at something newer?
Why do they still sell these? For people who run old pc's or what?

Thanks

The Powercom units are well known, unlike the Mecer one.

You should be able to easily get an USB to serial converter for like under R100 if I'm not mistaken. You don't need to connect your PC/laptop to the UPS via serial/USB cable, unless you leave it unattended and want it to switch off automatically.

What is your PC specs that you want to run off it? Also, are you going to run your screen off it too?

Yep, that's the exact reason I want them connected, for the automated shut down. Well my pc runs on a 500W PSU and I might connect my monitor to the UPS aswell. I reckoned the 1000va should suffice.

Just don't expect to get two hours of battery life out of a 1000VA UPS if your PSU is at 500W. From my experience you will probably get between 20 and 30 minutes if you are lucky.

Just need 5 to 10 minutes and the automated shut-down when not in front of the pc.
