Hi

I recently bought my mother a Mecer 1200VA UPS so that she can watch DSTV. She shares a communal dish in her block of flats, when the power goes off the UPS does not work.
Is there any way around this?

Thanks!

This doesn't make sense, the dish isn't powered by anything, also UPS devices aren't designed to power devices for that long. For long periods of outages you require an inverter and a battery, or generator.
Does the UPS just power down after a few minutes or what isn't working?

Hi, when the power goes off it doesn't power up at all. The only time is when power is on and I switch over to UPS.

What doesn't power up at all? The decoder, the TV?

Is this what you got? What battery does it have? Also is the button pressed in? When fully charged and online the green light remains steady, if it's flashing it means you're probably not on online mode.

This thread lacks information and pictures.

Could you show how everything is wired up and a picture of the unit?

Your post is a bit hard to decipher but im going to assume that the LNB is the culprit here. Its also hard to know what will help without knowing what LNB was used. You can try switch on the LNB power on the decoder and see what happens.

I rigged a similar setup for a friend in a retirement complex that has a communal dish.
Her Inverter, TV and decoder are all up and fine and working during loadshedding, but the communal dish has some sort of powered signal amp or booster (or something  ) and when the mains goes down that also goes down. The net result is that all she sees is "searching for signal"...

Maybe a silly question... Do you have a battery connected to the inverter... It needs an external battery.

That's actually quite a valid question. An ignorant person may not realise this is something that's needed with that particular setup.

Press the silver button on the front of the mecer - online / offline modes.
It should be in "online' mode - always on.

If the UPS doesn't work then that has nothing to do with the communal DSTV dish.
Agreed, but the OP's post is open to interpretation: Why mention 'communal dish' and 'ups doesn't work' in the same sentence? Is it a UPS issue, or a communal dish issue? We await further info from the OP...

See my post (#7) above.

We have a similar setup in our block of flats - the communal DSTV dish goes to splitter and then a powered signal amplifier to handle the number of connections that we require.

OP would either have to chat to the body corp for a battery backup for the dish or look at streaming DSTV.

Your post is missing a lot of information
from the way you post sounds like you have the ups one side and not even connected to the dstv - why are you having to switch to the UPS (it's a UPS it should automatically switch over unless you have not set it to do this) - als WTF does it have to do with the communal dish - is is a powered splitter on that communal dish?

so many other questions but you rather post what you are doing and what's connected and how , so we can understand what you need.
