UPS/backup system for PC

Hi guys,

I am looking at getting a UPS/backup system for my PC(incl monitor obviously :) ) at home, so that I can work during load-shedding ... anyone know of any good (and resonably) priced systems that can accomplish this??
I would also like it if it could allow me to run about 3 lights, the TV, and my adsl modem.

I spoke to the guys at smartpower and they want to give me a 500VA/Watt(not sure which one it is!!) unit, that they say will be fine for my PC and TV for at least 4 hours. So far, from what I read, that does not sound right ... as the other sites say that I would need a 1400VA unit. Anyone know about this and willing to shed some "light" :)

Also, this unit from smartpower seems to operate like a UPS, except it provides power for longer... which is what I want. They are costing it at around 4.6k ... is that reasonable??

any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated :)

I bought myself a 1400 watt pure sine wave inverter (a UPS really) for R2750 and 2 deep-cycle batteries (102AH and 95 AH) for around R1000 each.
Total R4750.
Runs my PC with a 600 watt power supply, 19'' CRT monitor, printer, router, cordless phones etc for hours.
I could probably get 8-10 hours out of it.

Where did you get your 102ah batteries from - which make are they? Are they sealed lead acid? They seem to be a very good price!

I got a Deltec Sealed lead acid 102AH battery for R900!.

I first phoned Deltec who quoted me R1395, then tried a number of shops here in Durban, until Pinetown Battry and Spares Centre said they have one left, for R900.
Most of the other shops were completely out of stock.

I then got an ECDelco 95AH Sealed Lead Acid BAttery for R1095 from Battery City.
It was their last one. They gave me R95 off, in return for an old car battery of mine, so it really cost me R1000.

Good prices. Assuming that all of the above amount to ~1200W, you should be able to get more or less 6-7 hours off of it. JUST NEVER TOTALLY DISCHARGE YOUR BATTERIES. This has the same effect as with car batteries. You shorten the lifetime of the battery and it messes the capacity (ie -5%cap for a complete discharge). If the battery is oldish, you could completely ruin it. Preferably never discharge it past 25%.

Intellipower 4 www.catsdigital.co.za
Its 2000VA with 2 105AH batteries

I run a PC, 20" LCD, Router, 72cm CRT TV, 18W CFL light, home theatre system, and a DVD player off it.

I have run everything together for 5,5 hours, with no sign of running out of power
Easily handles our normal 4 hour loadsheding schedule ( City power schedule )

Whatch out for cheap generators that dont produce clean power, and make a LOT of noise.

I work for cats on weekends ... come visit me at Sandton tomorrow :)
We sell these intellipowers like hotcakes. Currently we have about 30 in stock ... I can almost guarantee we will be sold out by the end of the week.

102AH Deep Cycle batteries normal price is around R900, but ofcourse with the high demand places have put up prices dramatically.

They do seem to be in short supply, as dealers wait for stock to arrive in batches

If buying, make sure you get a deep cycle battery, and not a normal car battery

When I was initially looking at them, i went to woodmead on a monday morning to have a look and ask about pricing if I bought 5.
They had 10 in stock

Went back the next day at 14:00, and they were all gone

Luckly Sandton had stock and gave me the same discount

They seem to walk out their doors, eventhough the are asking R500 more than most places for them
