Hi guys,

Geez, I've bought half a dozen freeking UPS's from proline, to whatever those funny brands are at matrix. ALL of them are now concked, didnt even last a year....except for one! I also bought it from matrix, its called a numeric, and its been rock solid for like 3 years now, and it still keeps a good charge.

I'm looking at getting 2 more of them, expecially after such excellent service. Vexon has them on special, anyone got any other brands they can recommend, or have had excellent service from?

Has anyone bought from Vexon?

yeah, and I think I got played. I was actually going to replace the batteries in the porked ones and I found a place in Randburg that specialises in UPS and also sell the battery replacements. They said they would test them for me and let me know. Big mistake! I now realise....are ppl really that full of dishonest s h i t!! Unless they were really stuffed....I will never know.

I should have just asked for the batteries and tried it myself. They took the UPS's and phoned me back and said they all beyond repair, then tried to sell me something 600KVA for R900. So I told them no thanx and to throw the old ones out. I only now realise I've possible been dupped!!!! I HATE DISHONEST PPL!!!!! WHY WHY WHY, NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!!!

Well anyways, back to my reliability issues. I think I'm going with the numerics again, cause its the only one I ever bought that actually lasted longer than a year. Its been over 3 years now and still going well. WTF

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with UPS'es.

I also did UPS battery replacement a while ago. It was quite simple

- let UPS charge overnight without any load
- the next day, connect a PC with monitor (full load) to said UPS, and check how long the battery will handle the load. Usually a borked battery gives out immediately to 2 minutes.
- Replace borked battery with new battery of the same make and model (this is important as too strong a battery won't be charged at all, and a weak one will exhaust quicker).
- Let battery charge overnight without any load, and the next day, put a PC and monitor to the UPS and check for UPS performance.
- If UPS still borks then it's the UPS electronics and not the battery. For that you'll need either a new UPS, or specialist repairs.

You also get modular UPS'es which is designed to have extra batteries (up to a set limit) added to these - this is great for future expansion/battery replacement whenever needed.

UPS are hit & miss.

Had a power outage a week back. UPS died in under 15 sec. FFFFUUUUUU. Need to try what Lib said (pt 4)

agreed, hope u come right, what brand?

I seriously had excellent service from Numeric brand. I looked it up, apparently made in india....well, they got the UPS right...its working very well

THe biggest problem with UPS's is the batteries.
We have our units at work checked every 6 months. That includes a full discharge test. It is the quicest way to see if all the battries is still ok.

To get the longest life from your UPS battery, keep it cool and clean!!!!
For every degree you go over 25, you reduce the life of the battery significantly.
Normal expected battery life is around 5years.

Now, to the diffrent types of UPS and cost.
The normal cheapy, or runn of the mill, is an off-line UPS. These will only run from the battery when the supply voltage is out of a set range. Cheap, but does an ok job for the price.
The more expencive ones, like the APC, is an on-line UPS. That means the voltage is actively regulated via the UPS giving way better protection. Much more expencive than the off-line units.

No. You've got on-line and line interactive mixed up.

If anyone on this forum has a true on-line UPS then I'll be very impressed cause a small one goes for R15 000+.

This man speaks the truth.
Very important the Ah rating of battery.
Try chargining overnight @ a reputable battery place.
Repairing UPS electronics is not worth it, unless we talking about a R20k + UPS system.
And if you chucking the UPS's, please make sure u throw them away in the right place :D
