Howsit all,

Just to confirm, I have a 650VA UPS, but I'm thinking its not going to be strong enough for the TV. I think what kills it, is the current spike on TV startup. Probably going to have to go 1000VA. Any comments welcome.

Must double check, but wouldn't the UPS also be capable of providing short burts of power above its normal rating? If so then 650VA should be enough if you are only running the TV off of it. Most LCDs that size dont get close to 200W power draw

I'd suggest a Tedelex IntelliPower 2/4 unit for this purpose - running my whole HT package and DSTV through one and it handles it fine - last power cut was for just over 4 hours, and I was the only one in our street able to watch DSTV and have some lights running!

I think 650VA should actually be OK, even with a spike. I think a screen like that would clock in at 300W max.

Sort-of yes. But its a really horrible idea to rely on that. As you go above spec the quality of the juice deteriorates. i.e Won't be 50Hz anymore so you might smoke the device connected to it.

I know that but I was talking about the very short (less than 1 second) burst while the TV stabilises its power draw. But none of the UPS's show this peak power draw, and how long it can be sustained for. So still not sure...

I agree with Howardb. I have worked one of those units before and they are brilliant. Rather be safe than sorry and use something with adequate power.
