UPS Help

Hi guys

I'm looking at buying a UPS as our voltage is fluctuating a bit, but I have absolutely no idea about what brands are decent and what size of UPS I need. Anything that's cheap and will keep the voltage steady will be perfect.

I'll be running a box (720BE, 4870 1GB, 3 HDD's , Corsair HX520), 22" LCD, small speakers, and a cheapo printer on it.

Looking at the extra peripherals I suggest a 1kVA, True Online = steady voltage > cheap = Line Interactive.

Awesome, thanks! The voltage only fluctuates slightly, but just enough to cause problems. Online would obviously be optimal, but it's a little pricey - would a Line Interactive be enough to keep the voltage steady?

What if I just ran the tower on it and left the rest of the components off? Would you recommend the same 1000VA/600W-700W or will lesser suffice?

Get APC, it's the world leader.

Go on to apc.com and you will find a wizard which will assist you in spec'ing your requirements

Online will supply you a constant 230Vac/50Hz off the inverter, unfortunately I don't see any smaller than 1kVA in my pricelists.
Line interactive basically passes Eskom power straight through and will switch to internal when there's spikes and dips or power outages, so you will not get a perfectly smooth supply from it but in most instances it will suffice, e.g. a smaller 650VA UPS will give you roughly 15 to 20min of power with just the tower and LCD, whereas my online 2kVA UPS gives me 4 Hours which is awesome but annoying at the same time with trying to concentrate on work while the UPS beeps away like a heart monitor.

Spend the money on a good online UPS if your power causes you problems.

Its generally not a good idea to power a laser printer from a shared UPS as they can really chew power when printing.

I've seen specs of anything up to 8 amps surge for some models.

I've decided to just run my tower and LCD on the UPS. Will have a look at the various options.
