Hi.

I bought a UPS to connect my fibre router and ONT box to continue working while load shedding is going on. The UPS adapter of the power cable doesn’t fit into the ONT power port. There’s a proper plug and a small hole at the back. I’m not even sure that the small hole is a power port. The ONT looks like this:

The adapters that run from the UPS, but doesnt fit the small hole of the ONT is circled with blue, look like this:

Does anyone have advice?

The UPS is a GIZZU Mini 8800mAh Dual Voltage DC UPS purchased from Take a Lot. In hindsight, I’ve realized that the UPS is not big enough for the ONT - if it can even be placed on a UPS. I will get a bigger one if I can manage to connect the ONT to the UPS. The ONT unit belongs to Frogfoot and according to them the ONT is only compatible with an inverter.

I hope someone can possibly help me (shed some light haha).

So in short there is still no fix?

It looks pretty simple from the pic of the connector, only two of the pins have hollow core conductors so that would be positive and negative. Should just be a case of getting a similar connector or two male pins and insulating them if you feel brave - not that 12v is going to do much. You would have to get the polarity correct though and that would require a multi-meter to figure out.

I have the same router, i wonder why the power cables are different from yours. I also didnt have to connect anything to the ONT, if i even have an ont. All i see are two white boxes next to my router.

I have a Frogfoot ONT and it takes a normal 12V plug... Maybe mine is a newer model.

@williamveeden , You need to remove the power adaptor as mentioned above. The UPS will power it whether Eskom is shedding or not. Put away the original power adapter.

Just make sure the Gizzu can supply the required current.

I also have one, the 14400mAh and it has 5 12V outputs labelled 12V 5A so I'm not sure if that is 1A per port or if that's on a bus and the current is shared.

I think it may be shared in which case should be fine (on my model), check yours.

That hole circled in blue looks like a reset port. You stick something in there to do a factory reset.

Nope, this is a businessey type of frogfoot GigaHub ONT that allows for direct phone lines etc. It has this stupid 8-pin power connector*, as shown on the power brick.

Will most probably have to make up a custom cable for this to get it to work on the gizzu.

*They acutally call it a 'UPS' connector even - the audacity.

The only workaround I can think of is to get a cheap UPS, maybe you have one lying around already or maybe your office has ones with flat batteries.

If you can get an old UPS then you can put a lithium battery in and boom, you can plug your fiber router and ont directly onto the UPS.

Bad idea. How much room does this take and weigh. A mini UPS you can carry in your pocket if you need to move it or go to you holiday home.

Eish ok.

One of those. Hate it when manufacturers use weird plugs.

30W for an ONT?? That's crazy.

It is probably <~18W rather. I read in the calix ordering guide for the 800 series gigahub that some initial units shipped with 2.5A bricks while some of the "newer" units ship with 1.5A ones. These ONTs also cater for multiple V?/LANs and telephone services over the same line and will probably use a bit more power than your standard ONT, but not much, if I had to hazard a guess.

Just need a normal PCIE 8-pin plug (I think*), a 5.5x2.5mm DC female terminal block 2 pin and some heatshrink ...

*Although I picked up some chatter than the plug is not a normal PCIE/CPU plug - note how the notches/cutouts on the diagram on the power brick do not align with any of the PCIE/CPU plugs below.

@williamveeden could you post a picture of the actual power plug cable end so that one can compare it with the notches above?

Edit:
This is what I have managed to find. Not the best quality, but seems to match the diagram above. A better quality image + one of the female/ont side would be appreciated @williamveeden

Edit 2: Seems like with some of the 6+2 PCIE plugs, the +2 part might work for a DIY jobbie as they are both rounded and should fit any receptacle, bar the little protrusion where it fits into the 6-side, but that should be easy to remove.

Don't know if your ONT really draws 2.5A constantly, but if it draws close to that, then you should look into a bigger UPS in any case since the 8800mAh might not be enough to last you through load shedding with its low power cut off. And I believe the Gizzu has a total max load output of 36W, so if you connect anything else that exceed 12V at 0.5A, then it could damage your Gizzu UPS.

It won't. As per the specs it will draw Typical Power: 5.5 W and max 8W - with all the features running full tilt. That is about in line with my residential ONT that draws like 3.5W.

In other news, this is my current challenge, a Calix 716GE-I:
