UPS shuts down after ~5 minutes ... but why?

I have an old proline UPS and the batteries died over the years.
I bought 2 new batteries, (those alarm/gate 12v batteries), I plugged it all back in and everything seems to be working just fine.

While the batteries are not the exact same brand, they are the same size/voltage/ha

I loaded my Winpower 5.7, (the latest one), on my laptop and it picks up the UPS just fine. It shows a voltage of 25.7, (100% is 26v I think)
I disabled all the shutdown options, so the batteries should run flat.

When I turn the power off, the UPS takes over ... and everything looks fine ... but after 5 or 6 minutes, the UPS just shutsdown.
Nothing is logged in Winpower, so I don't think that the shutdown request comes from the software ...

With that in mind, I have tried with nothing plugged in, no laptop, no software, no USB, nothing at all. I just turn the power off and waited.

And the UPS still shutsdown after a couple of minutes, (same, about 5 or 6 minutes).

I tested the batteries straight after shutdown, (well, it took me a couple of minutes to re-open the box), and the batteries were still a healthy ~90% charged. The UPS did not feel hot, maybe slightly warm at best.

Can anybody thinks why my UPS would shutdown after a couple of minutes?
And how can I stop this?
 
Maybe its going into power save mode. Try a laptop and see if that works.

Not sure I understand, try what with the laptop? I have tried with/without laptop connected, the UPS shutsdown regardless.

Are you saying that the UPS has a power save mode and I can turn it off with the laptop?
 
Model number please. Have you had a looked what the manual sez?
How long did you charge the batteries for before experimenting?

Sadly the manual is long gone, I tried to google it, without much luck.
If you can find one somewhere that would be great :)

I found a couple that claim to be the same model ... but when you read the manual you can see that it is not the same model.

How long did you charge the batteries for before experimenting?

It shuts off because there isn't enough power draw?

Maybe ... but I have my laptop plugged in, it should draw _some_ power.
Not sure what else to plug in to be honest.

I just need it to keep the laptop topped up.

If the load is only 1-5% then it shutsdown after about 5/7 minutes.
Anything above that ... and it keeps running.

It is a bit annoying as I need it to keep my laptop running when/if the battery is low.

Having said that I can see that it was not really designed to do something like keeping a laptop charged up.

Let the laptop run down to 50% and then use the UPS? I'm sure the load will be big enough when it tries to charge.
 
I know this is a delayed/old responce, but I'm leaving it for any other people with the same issue. The Proline units has a "green safe" feature that shuts down the unit if you don't draw enough power. You have to remove/de solder a resitor on the board so the unit will keep on running until flat. Each model is different, thus each resistor is different.

It's never good to run a battery till it is flat, specially lead acid. There is a reason why they do this, to protect the battery.

The real issue is that I was trying to use the UPS for something it was not really designed to do, (trying to use it as an inverter vs a UPS).

Thanks to loadshedding and so on I now have 4x 12v batteries and an inverter.
