Hi,

I have a customer looking for a UPS to power his PC and monitor for 1-3 hours.
I assume a 1100VA should get him to the 1 hour mark on a PC that won't use more than 450W.

I'm speaking about the MGE UPS so quality is also there.
Perhaps you could give me insight into the correct option.

tell him to get a generator

they cost about 3k and will run both pc and monitor for how ever long the power is down
 
But is a generator going to be a better option ... isn't a UPS easier to use? Perhaps he lives in a flat and there is no where to put a generator ... I will put it past him, but in the mean time please let me know what a good long lasting UPS size would be.
 
yea if he does not live in a flat a ups will be expensive and wont last the length of the powercut

if he lives in a flat though it is his only option
 
The power boxes seem nice ... but I can get him a 1100VA UPS for much cheaper and seeing as it is only for his PC, according to that power box site it should run for a long time.
 
Load shredded our block (Rosebank Dunkeld area) after dinner till just now.........
 
He doesn't need the biggest .... he only needs a 1000VA I think ... according to that site ... this will last 8 hours ... I can't see that happening though ... I would estimate 1.5 hours if you're lucky depending on wattage of unit.
I think it is a 5000VA @ R19500 Ex vat ... but I'm not too clued up on these which is why I would like someone who knows them info or if you use one at home, you'll know.

guys remember that the VA rating on a UPS does not indicate it's battery life, simply the maximum power draw.

Battery life varies huge amounts.

THe MGE might only last 30mins.

If the Priority is protection, go for the MGE or a APC UPS. if Endurance is the Priority, the Powerbox guys seem to have a good solution.
 
I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding here. The spec regarding 1000VA or 5000VA only determines the maximum power that the unit can supply. The duration is a function of the battery size and I found no reference to that in the discussion. Although it is true that a larger VA value is often associated with a larger battery, and therefore would then run a small load longer then a lower VA value unit. The point I'm trying to make is that for a just a PC you really need a low VA unit with a large battery. I have seen some suppliers that sell a charger+inverter unit as a standalone, with a choice of batteries or you can supply your own battery.
 
Batteries are expensive, so you will never find a better price I think

Look at what a car battery costs. Were talking batteries 10 times bigger here with the Powerboxes
 
Please can anyone make a suggestion to me of which UPS available from computer suppliers will endure 1 - 3 hours on a standard PC of about 450W so that I can quote my customer ... so that would be a bigger battery then ... I would appreciate a product name ... thanks

Hi all

I just wanted to let you know that I'm using one of the powerboxes at my home-office setup. I only know about power outages because the lights go out, but the PC is running fine.

I'm using the small unit (300W), and I'm powering a P4 with 2x LCD monitors (19" and 17"), plus a network harddrive, ADSL router, cordless telephone and DVD player/amp. I don't know if it will last the full 7 or 8 hours, but I have not been without power during those 2 - 2.5 hour outages. Only the laser printer is connected to a separate outlet, so that goes down when the power fails.

I am seriously considering buying another one to use at home (my home-office is not at my own home) for my laptops, ADSL router, TV and some lights.

One more thing - I will suggest a surge protector (about R140 - R250) to go with the powerbox, just in case and for more protection.

interesting i need to invest in a ups, over how long will load shedding be happening? will prob be cheaper to just get a good ups than spend money on a cheaper gen and keep filling it up over the next 5 years or however long it will be..
 
I'm just waiting for payday so I can order a powerbox. Generators are not allowed in my complex :(
 
I have a problem buying from someone who can't do a simple spell check....
