Ok, I'm really a noob at this stuff and was hoping someone more knowledgeable than I could assist me.

We are looking for a UPS to run the following setup:

4 servers (I guess around 500w each)
1 modem
2 X 24 port switches
1 monitor
Wifi router

Our power is up and down, and we would need the UPS to stay up for about 20 - 30 mins.

Any idea what size UPS we would need for this?

Would rather think you would need a generator with auto switch and a min of a 2kva ups between them. Somehow doubt a ups will hold for 20 to 30 minutes. I get maybe 4 mins froma 1kva on a 350W system but by then i have the gennie running :)

APC's SURT range is great, there SUA range is also good. Models ending with XLI are battery expandable. Depending on your budget, I'd look at either the SUA 2000 XLI or the SURT 3000 XLI and a few batteries. For a quote call Nelson at Diesel Electric Services.

What about a couple of Inverex 1200W inverters and 2 deep cycle batteries (or 4 depending on the backup time you need)

I got mine sorted for about R3000 and they work great - lasts about 4-6 hours running three PC's/LCD's and an ADSL modem...

Get a Tedelex Intelli Power, UPS. Those things have big batteries inside and run for quite a while, one of my clients has one, he runs a server, pc, two monitors, slip printer on it.

Maybe you can get two for your equipment. Here's some info , just google for more info. I think Hi-fi Corp stocks these.

It's not simply a matter of power, but also of management. The APC range is designed with management in mind. With the XL range you can add a bunch of battery packs, I think the limit is about 10, in order to increase autonomy and still have suficient charging power to be ablke to charge them. They come in rackmount versions too.
