Anyone with some knowledge of ups' that can tell me what is suitable to get, to enable my PC and a few lights to function for a few hours??

you have 2 types online and line-interactive:
-Online ups switches to backup power from batteries as soon as power is cut. The switching takes a few milliseconds, which is not good for some pc's.
-Line-interactive UPS are premenatly running of backup from batteries even when the power is not cut, constantly charging the batteries. This means there's no interuption in the supply of power to the pc. This is the better and more expensive (2-3x more) of the 2 types.
I'm currently using a cheap online sahara ups. Works fine, catches the power outages, but the 600va can only run the pc for 5 min if that long. Not always enuf time to shut it down.
Suggest you look at a 1Kva or bigger.

so only 5 to 15 mins .... there goes that idea .... what are the options if I want it to last a few hours??

1. Off line
2. Line-interactive (best value-for-money option) Normally does AVR. Takes out spikes and switches to backup (battery power) when insufficient or no power is received.
3. Online - most expensive. The devices connected never "sees" the input power to the UPS. The way I understand it: It converts A/C to D/C and for out put converts D/C back to A/C - hence always runs from battery converted power.
(See MGE UPS as 1 ups supplier to assist with selecting a UPS. And no, I don't work for them, nor do I run a MGE UPS, but it does provide a dimension.)
I have a Proline Smart 2KVA Line Interactive UPS from Pinnacle.
Other options:
Use a laptop
Buy a Generator - e.g. Honda (Inverter type.) The EU301 "Even more impressive is its fuel efficiency, it can run for up to 8.7 hours on only two litres of petrol , that translates into a 20-40% fuel saving."

The EU301's are probably in the region of about R12k. (Haven't check pricing since last year. It could be anything from R9k-R14k.)
If you select the tab: Contact us: Dealers, you will find accredited Honda dealers. It is a great generator! Probably gives cleaner power than Eskom.
