They did. And then the games just looked uglier and uglier and more obviously outdated as the console aged.

Their games are getting better... despite the console getting older.

You don't find it at all disappointing that Microsoft is clearly pulling back on hardware this generation? You're perhaps hoping for an evolution of motion control?

TBH I actually despise that MS have a console, it erks me to support them. When I saw Natal I almost broke down and got an xBox.... then they released it and I breathed a sigh of relief. So no I don't really care what they release.

You do realize I'm a big fan of Nintendo right? I'm not on an anti-Nintendo rant here. Wii was a very bold move. My opinion though is that MS looked at the success and decided they could save money on hardware because people don't care about graphics or something like that. The problem with this is that XBOX games and PC games are very closely related - generally XBOX games are what gets ported to the PC. And I doubt they'll compromise their relationships with game devs by breaking that cycle. So console gamers can have what they want - but as a PC gamer, I want games that do push graphical boundaries. That will not happen if consoles are stuck a generation behind for the next 10 years.

I do...for reasons stated above. And the XBOX360 is actually a great console.
 
Specs of these consoles often look like watered down PC's, but they always end up blowing us away and playing the latest games very well years after they come out.
 
The N64 was monstrously powerful - it was a stripped down Silicon Graphics rendering machine that could do proper AA and z-buffering. .

The N64 also had it's problems,
1. ROM cartridges instead of optical media.
2. Limited 4 KB texture cache.
3. Z-buffering crippled the RDP′s fill rate.
4. High latency of RDRAM.

Besides that it was a brilliant console!
 
Wonder how much it would cost to add something like a industry standard dimm slot to a console. Open flap/cover, insert 256MB-1GB dimm and voila.

I think if this was the case then some modders would have already done it.

I think the problem is that the platform is locked in to using that amount of memory, like it can only allocate 256meg.
 
Games will look like whatever the hardware limitations allow regardless.

Don't underestimate DirectX overheads and limitations introduced to PC developers. Console devs can program "direct-to-metal" (directly to the hardware, rather than going through a standardised software API) so to speak.

"On consoles, you can draw maybe 10,000 or 20,000 chunks of geometry in a frame, and you can do that at 30-60fps. On a PC, you can't typically draw more than 2-3,000 without getting into trouble with performance, and that's quite surprising - the PC can actually show you only a tenth of the performance if you need a separate batch for each draw call. "

My point is that there are very few PC games out now that take advantage of the latent power of today's GPU's because they are all scaling across to 6 year old console hardware.

Remove consoles from the equation and PC's will still be held back by the fact that most PC gamers play on MID RANGE hardware, so no, PC gaming wouldn't be much further ahead if developers didn't have consoles holding them back

Any optimisations that are written for that hardware can be re used until the next console generation comes along.

Instead I ask why cant an old Geforce from 2006 produce God of war quality visuals on the PC, yet it can on PS3.

That should be obvious. Developers can optimize code for a known hardware configuration. They can't optimize for your 8600gt if it doesn't work on my 5770.

Besides that, the answer is overheads. Without an OS to work through makes things so much more efficient. The devs get access to the hardware on an extremely low level.

You code for the lowest common denominator, 256MB RAM in this case. If more RAM is detected enhancements/features are enabled. RAM is so cheap I reckon people won't mind slotting in another stick of RAM.
 
The N64 released an add-on ram pack. It made a significant difference to the graphical quality. Some of the EOL games approached Dreamcast quality. Devs just made allowance for it - some like Perfect Dark couldn't function without it, and some just increased texture quality if it was there.
 
I can't see them going anywhere near a top spec PC in terms of hardware simply because of price. The console will have to come out around the $500 mark and when you consider top end graphics cards are $1000 they have to use cheaper options.

True but they gonna order a few million chips not one I think thw $1000 card will cost them only like $50
