I need some advice as to what ADSL to choose. I currently do not have any Internet connection or land line. I seriously need to get the Internet at home to use for my PS3 as well as for video and audio downloads. However the problem is my desktop is upstairs and my PS3 is downstairs and there is no way I cna move either. Which is my best option for an ADSL line? My budget is R500.00 in total pm to spend on Intenet. All advice would be greatly appreciated.
Your first month is going to be very expensive, probably way more than R500-00. You need an ADSL router (you can purchase your own) and all the initial setup fees including line installation from Telkom.
The ADSL market is moving a bit fast lately which I can honestly say I'm not used to

I think for a first time user it would be easier to go for an all-in-one deal which includes your ADSL line rental as well as your ISP charge and let them handle the DSL line installation for you.
So step 1 would be to phone Telkom and arrange for them to install your telephone line. See how much it will cost. If you want your DSL Line rental to go directly to Telkom you can enable this as well at extra charge depending on how fast you want the line to be (You need the DSL line rental - just depends on if you want to pay it directly to Telkom or via your ISP if they offer an all inclusive bundle). You have to have the analogue telephone line unfortunately and this is an extra monthly charge around R100-R120 even if you don't use it.
Then you would need to buy yourself a router (unless you go with Telkom's router) and set up an account with an ISP of your choice. (Maybe check out Mweb's All Inclusive package if you want to pay them the DSL line rental rather and keep it as one payment). Or check out some of the others like Afrihost or MyISP if you prefer to buy data from them.
So all in all you pay monthly for - Telkom Analogue line + call charges, DSL Line Rental, Data from any ISP of your choice.
As for your setup at home you can either go for a router with Wi-Fi wireless signal if you think it will reach between Playstation and PC. Or you can do what I did and just buy really long network cables to link everything up. I personally hate Wi-Fi. You're going to have to setup your router on your own and also activate your line with Telkom so be prepared for this. Or if you pay Telkom the extra bucks I'm sure they'd set up your router if you bought theirs but this is an extra installation charge you can avoid afaik.
Once all is done after the first month you should be paying less than R500-00 as long as you weigh up all the options and line speeds and packages etc...
1 tip though, try and avoid any contracts...I don't know who out there still offers DSL on contract with bundled routers etc but if they try sell you one I would not take it. Prices are dropping and you don't want to tie yourself down as soon as the next big price drop comes along.
