Hey guys. Really need some help asap. Going to purchase a TV this morning at Game. Looking at either the Samsung UA40D50 (40") R5 999 or the Sony Bravia KLV-40BX420 + plus HDPVR (40") R5 999.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!!!

Go with sony and hd pvr unless you plan on connecting the tv up to your pc, in which case go with the samsung.

I would choose Samsung every time. I've been a firm fan of theirs for years now. They make the best screens in the world, whether it be for TV, PC or Mobile.

If you're going to stream video off the internet then Sony's internet video interface is much better than Samsungs.

1) List intended usage
2) List lighting conditions
3) List viewing distance

No one can advise without this.

The Samsung UA40D5000 is a superior TV with better picture quality, but no TV is that good that it can compensate for an inferior input signal.

So ultimately the Sony using a HDPVR (digital HDMI signal) will be better than the Samsung using a std DSTV decoder (analogue RCA signal).

Yup without a doubt. Rather have the hd decoder and tv than just a tv :p.

Agreed - that PVR is awesome as is the quality of signal input. Remember though - to get the HD channels, whivh you will ultimately want and PVR functionality is R60 / month on ur dstv sub
