A close relative went to get an operation done about 6 months back. Its a short standard procedure which has an over 95 success rate. Now 1 week after the procedure she fell quite ill and it was discovered that she contracted a post operative infection. The bacteria was found to be very resistant ( which is the case for infections contracted in theater) after a string of antibiotics and eventually being re-admitted in the hospital the infection was cured. But even after the infection was gone she feels post operative pain and feels very uncomfortable physically from the operation. She consulted the doctor several times but he has adopted a dont care attitude. He said he doesnt know what the problem is and is refusing to do further tests. He prescribed some medication but after reading about the medicine he has prescribed medicine for depression!

This was the last straw and wants to consult another doctor. Does anyone know of any good urologists in Cape Town or Joburg? Can she take any legal action against the doctor? Since its a private hospital she went to, I thought you sign waivers to prevent that sort of thing.

This thread is wierd :o

Ja, a urologist isn't just a dick doctor, they work with urological disorders in males and females.
Women don't pee out their vaginas :D

No I get that. I just thought that a gynecologist does the exact same (including urinal tract) but on females.

Kinda like a woman version of a Urologist.

Doctor has to inform his patients what he prescribes to them as well as associated risks. This is malpractice, I believe.

@ratty: I understand your concern but rather get a 2nd medical opinion even if only from the family GP.

6 mths ago I had my vasectomy and a few weeks later an infection in the one testicle that caused my nut to swell to the size of a tennis ball (seriously that big), I went to my GP as my Nut Doc was on holiday and he confirmed that it was not caused by negligence from my Nut Doc but it can happen (the GP had done hundreds of vasectomies himself).

Also be cautious of the Internet when reading up on medication - rather confirm with a chemist (or three) on the medication as they are usually the best source to find out when this medication is commonly prescribed.

A relative of mine had a similar experience in a private Life hospital in Cape Town. Doctors seem extemely arrogant, secretive and unresponsive. They don't willingly admit to making mistakes. She also contracted a hospital bug.

Funny enough this happened at a Life hospital as well but in Beacon Bay, East London
