If I were able to buy an IP address from an ISP in the US, would I be able to use it in South Africa?

If so, how? Can I use it with my ADSL connection? Or do I need to have some type of leased line?

the answer to that question depends entirely on the reason why you specifically need an ip in the us . . .

Lord Fubar, any examples?

Hypothetically, let's say I'm a gambling addict and there are some gambling websites that don't allow access to anyone outside of the US.

Or I want to watch Hulu, or listen to Pandora, or open a PayPal account etc.

Or maybe I'm in Burma and I need a US IP to help protect my identity. (Tor should work for this)

Or, maybe, I'm just curious as to how the internet really works... :)

Yes you can,

Rent a VPS or Dedicated server in the US that comes with multiple IP addresses, then create a VPN tunnel from your PC to this server allocating yourself one of the unused IP addresses.

Thanks warwickw, that's a great idea!

Now, to find a way to catch that elusive animal called "cheap & fast bandwidth"...

i.e. To use it, you'd also need somebody to "host" it for you over there.
But .. yea .. it's all the way over there, and you're all the way over here ... perhaps whomever is hosting your ip address can also mail you DVD's of the stuff as you download it ...

a US ip might be a good idea, more anonymous, there is this site i found that keeps banning SA ip's.

there are tons of free proxy servers in the us . . . if you only need anonymity then you don't need to pay.

i would not recommend you use one of these free and open servers to do any kind of online transactions though, because for that you need a ssl encrypted link.

plenty of ways to kill a cat, and i will reiterate, be more specific on what what exactly you need to do, so you can avoid trial and error . . .

i would recommend OVH dedicated servers and an uncapped high speed account account here in SA

check out http://hosting-ie.com for 100mbit up to to a gigabit link ;-

You could use the IP on a server on the network of said ISP in the US and then VPN/portforward/blackmagic the traffic from your machine via the US server.

If you wanted the IP to appear as the IP on your router when you dial the Internet then you would need a leased line... and then BGP peer with your service provider and announce you /32.... highly unlikely. You would then have to convince every ISP on the planet to remove their BGP filters and accept your announced /32... even more unlikely :p
