I bought a US iPAd due to the local stock shortages and have a strange problem,

when i plug it into the wall socket using the iPad charger and cable she charges no problem, when i plug her into my iMac she charges no problem, however if i try to use my iPhone charge she shows a "not charging" message, i googled this and it seems that the iPhone charge might not carry enough power to charge the iPad as it uses more power. It said that some of the older laptops etc also wont charge due to lower power out of the USB hubs.

My question is this, why wont it charge on my work laptop, it 2 months old and is a brand new HP powerbook 6550b, which in my opinion should be seen as a newer USB hub model ?

Is there anyway around this.

PS the ipad only charges when connected to the laptop if the screen is off completely and then charges at around 1% every 20min....

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, i really need to be able to charge the ipad via my laptop as i dont want to carry around a proper charger everywhere ?

Thanks

If your laptop USB does not give the required power in watts to the Ipad it will always show "not charging". It is in fact charging but super slow.

I do not believe you will find a fix or work around for this.

Standard USB port is 500mA to 1000mA.

The iPad requires about 2000mA to charge.

The problem is not your notebook, but the non-standard implementation required by the iPad - but, then, Apple has never been known for following standards.

BTW, this is also why the Xoom cannot charge from the microUSB port, Motorola decided to follow standards, and to rather charge the Xoom with a 12 volt power supply - a side benefit of this is that the Xoom charges twice as fast as an iPad.

Ok, i am still a bit confussed though, why does it charge via the imac which has a 500mA limit which can be increased to 1100mA under the proper circumstance and only with another apple device, from what i have seen 1100mA is the absolute limit of any USB port on a mac.

Is it really possible that as my laptop is only pushing out 1000mA at most it wont properly charge, can 100mA make that much difference ?

Also the iPad charger i have is a US 2 pin based one, if i had to buy an Official Apple local iPad charger, would this work ? The reason i ask is that my iPhone original charger does not work, it also says not charging...

All major PC/motherboard manufacturers have brought out a tool that allows you to increase the power which will allow you to charge your ipad2 through USB. If you're on an old rotten Apple you're screwed :D

An official local iPad charger will work.

But the iPhone charger wll not work as it does not supply enough current.

BTW, I have a dual USB charger that supplies 2100mA from each port, this is ideal. It is made by XtremeMac.

So got home and scoured my box of cables and found a dual USB adapter and that worked perfectly....

Thanks for all the help guys....
