Hey guys.

Just got an iPad2. Completely new to Apple products.

Registered the Apple ID - setup iTunes on PC and so on, all good. But there seems to be a complete lack of apps - am I right in thinking the SA iTunes store has very little compared to the US?

ie: I don't see Angry Birds (except for guides/other stuff related) nor do I see half the other games I've read about unless I switch to the USA store - but I don't have an Apple ID for that.

Should I create a new Apple ID account and ditch my current one?

Change your country to Kenya. You'll need it add an extra digit to the post code but that should be about it and you can still use your SA bank card.

There are plenty of missing games in the SA App store including Angry Birds, Camelot.

I think is that Americans think South Africa is a region and not a country. South Africa is not listed in Game Centre but Zimbabwe is. Lots of users have mailed them about it trying to explain South Africa is a country not a region and has a much bigger user base than Zimbabwe or other African countries listed that are listed in the Apple Game Centre App country list but Apple just responds with a generic response without reading the mail.

I tried going into Apple's site, changing my iStore location to Kenya.

Then restart iTunes, changing to Kenya worked but I still can't download, says my Apple ID is only valid for SA.

meh

Doesnt it have to do with the way our games are regulated etc, they have to go through regulatory board for ratings etc...

You'll need to make a new account (unfortunately that means a different email address too)

You can go to AppleID.com and link your SA ID to a new email address and link the Kenya ID to your original/SA ID.

Fairy nuff, should've said "you'll need an email address per country" :D

Sorry. Wasn't trying to get picky. I went through the same cr@ap when I changed from a SA ID to a US ID. AppleID.com helped with re-linking my email addresses to the relevant ID's as well as link my phone numbers and email address for iMessage.

Sign Out. Create a new apple ID, provide US address details (any big corp will do). Use these details from apple to create a new account without a credit card.

Once you're in the account. Go to maximuscards, select a card, choose to view price in USD and pay in USD. Enter you normal account and credit card details. Pay, wait 5 minutes and you'll get the gift voucher code in your email.

In terms of gift vouchers, I actually prefer managing my account with gift voucher because you can control your spend really tightly.

You can also register as a Kenyan, but I think it has to be a new account. A couple of the guys at work tried to transfer to Kenyan accounts and they still don't see al the apps I do.

Choosing a US address in which state is matter since some states like OR (Oregon) or DE( Delaware) do not charge sale tax while others charge from 5% to 10%. So do not choose the popular ones like CA (California) or NY (New York)

You pay sale tax for every purchase made from iTunes store unless your address is from a state does not charge sale tax.

My favorite method is searching "House for sale in Oregon or Delaware". Then I pick a real address and write it down.

FWIW there are a few games in the the SA store listed under the Entertainment section rather than in Games. Not a lot, and certainly not the big blockbusters (i.e. no emotional avians or indeterminate edged weapons). But if you are a casual gamer only, it may do. If you spot one, download it, they tend to disappear quickly. They'll pry iAsteroidz out of my cold, dead hands, which tells you just how old I am ...

Also, if you don't mind staying online while you play, there are webapp games available on http://openappmkt.com/ Block Dreams is a nice little Tetris clone that I play there occasionally.

I can forgive Apple for not selling games to us with the FPB issue. But not selling e-books just means that my money goes to Amazon, which has no problem selling me stuff to read on the Kindle app. Not selling music means more money for Rhythm Records.

And here we sit, on an open forum, casually discussing the best ways to break the law in two different countries simultaneously. Doesn't this strike anyone as odd?

I searched for a McDonalds in Maryland and picked the street number of the place next door :)

A nice tip when signing up for a US account is to drop the full stops from your gmail account (if you have one). In other words, my regular email account is something like [email protected] but my address for the account I signed up for US itunes and Amazon android free app of the day is [email protected]

The emails come to the same account because gmail apparently doesn't recognise the full stops in your address, and it means you can keep a track of your accounts and not have emails going all over the place to made up accounts you forget about.

So your SA account is xyz.123 and your US account is xyz123.

Interesting tip. Would that work the other way round? If your gmail address has no full stops ([email protected]) could you add them ([email protected])? Seems like it should work, logically speaking.

Just tried it adding a full stop into my wife's addy and it worked. Just tried it randomly inserting full stops into my addy and it also worked.

So there we have it. Lots of potential email addresses that all come to the same account :)
