Cape Town - South Africa declined an offer from the US government to deploy soldiers at the Pelindaba Nuclear Research plant near Pretoria after a 2007 break-in because it seemed to be a purely criminal matter, Energy Minister Dipuo Peters said on Tuesday.

"Such an offer was indeed received by the former department of foreign affairs. The offer was declined because the proposed intervention was unnecessary," she said in reply to a parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance.

"No South African troops were deployed at Pelindaba either."

Peters said four intruders cut the perimeter fence at Pelindaba on November 8. They broke into a garage and removed a ladder which they then used to climb into a first floor window.

The burglars attacked two staff and shot and injured one of them, before fleeing with their cellphones.

They were never caught but since they stole the phones and tried to steal a computer which contained no sensitive information, it seemed that their motive was theft not terrorism, the minister said.

"It is more likely that they were criminals as opposed to terrorists."

She said since the incident, security at the site had been "significantly upgraded".

Yes I do believe something of high value was stolen not sold on the black market but the Jihadi market

Well to be honest... i'd turn them down as well. Once you have US soldiers there... intel would be SO much easier for the US to gather.

They wouldn't offer unless they were getting something out of it... and a random break in like that wouldn't result in nuclear fuel or the like being stolen.

The point is, the facility has been broken into, be it from terrorist, regular criminals, who ever. Regardless if something of value was stolen or not, it poses a serious security threat for the future. What is stopping Pelindaba from becoming a giat bulls-eye for terrorists? Any nuclear power facility that experiences a breach in security would get offers from the USA to help secure it, they see it as in their best interests.

Well then show me where it has been broken into again if google missed the story then i am assuming you know more than google or have some info google missed

no one should ever be able to break into a nuclear facility! This is a huge security risk.

Shortly after midnight on 8 November 2007, four armed men infiltrated the facility headed towards a control room in the facility's eastern block.[4] According to the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), the state-owned entity that runs the facility, the four "technically sophisticated criminals" deactivated several layers of security, including a 10,000-volt electrical fence, suggesting insider knowledge of the system. An off-duty emergency services officer, who was shot by the men after a brief struggle, triggered the alarm, alerting a nearby police station. The four attackers escaped the facility by the same way they had entered. Though their images were captured on closed-circuit television, they were not detected by security officers because nobody was monitoring the cameras at the time. On 16 November, three suspects, between the ages of 17 and 28, were arrested by local police in connection with the incident. In response to the attack, NECSA suspended six Pelindaba security personnel, including the general manager of security, and promised an "internal investigation which will cover culpability, negligence and improvements of Security Systems."

Koeberg was also infiltrated once if I recall....was by activists or something against the then Nat government. They got themselves employed and tried to detonate a bomb. Was a white couple...man and wife. Dont think there has ever been a similar incident at Koeberg again since.
