US student abandoned in cell gets $4m

A California student who was abandoned in a prison cell for five days without food and water is to be paid 4.1 million dollars in compensation, the Los Angeles Times reported late Tuesday.

"It was an accident, a really bad, horrible accident," said Daniel Chong, now 25, in announcing the settlement with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He said he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Chong was taken into custody by the DEA in April 2012 after a raid at his university campus in the city of San Diego. He was told he would be released after questioning, the report said.

Instead, he was left in the cell for five days without food, water or access to a toilet.

Chong said he was forced to drink his urine, suffered hallucinations and feared he would die.

He was finally discovered severely dehydrated and rushed to hospital, where he was treated for five days.
