The United States is resuming sales of some weapons to Bahrain, but says it will not supply the Gulf state with any crowd control equipment.

The US State Department says the shipment will help Bahrain "maintain its external defence capabilities."

Arms sales were frozen last year after the Bahraini government suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations.

Amnesty International says 60 people have been killed since the protests began in February 2011.

It is thought a frigate and other coast guard vessels will be supplied, along with upgraded engines for F-16 fighters.

The State Department says an order for Humvee all-terrain vehicles and a new type of wire-guided missile will not be included.

Bahrain is a key US ally in the Gulf, hosting the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

Officials in Washington say the Obama administration still has concerns about human rights in Bahrain.

But human rights campaigners have condemned this move, saying it is out of step with the United States' commitment to reform in Bahrain.

Interesting that they are against dictators, poor human rights, killing your own citizens but they are supplying a country doing exactly that while they attack and remove regime after regime doing the exact same things.

Funny how friendly dictators are supplied with arms, unfriendly dictators are removed. Crazy world we live in. I thought the US had issues with dictators and wanted all of them removed, seems not to be the case which was obvious to people without blinkers. Then the US bitches when russia supplies syria with arms hahaha

The word police (USA) do exactly what suits their national interests .

Precisely, the US just do it with a fake smile and fake show for the camera; they have created the perfect smokescreen, with people still buying the "idea of America", rather than the "reality of America".

And for this reason some people (I was once one of them) will either defend this action, shrug their shoulders, turn a blind eye, or a combination and say "well it's the United States".

There is no difference between Russia and the United States. Well of course the one difference would be that in the last 20 years Russia hasn't invaded any sovereign countries in search of oil, sacrificing their own soldiers deliberately, killing thousands of innocent men, woman and children in the process, or launched indiscriminate unmanned drones killing innocent civilians.

But hey the US has Hollywood, a black president and The Avengers so they've gotta be alright....
