USA Trip January advice please

Good day
Anyone have some good advice for a contract customer on Vodacom?
Will be heading for the USA for a few weeks on business, mainly.
Was told that using free wifi would still incur data costs by the Vodacom customer care person this morning??

No, if you are using a wifi hotspot in the hotel etc then that does not get billed by Vodacom. For non wifi roaming rates:

Wifi is not equal 3G/4G.

just a t-mobile sim when you arrive. last check it was $ 40 for a month unlimited data + call.

I would recommend activating their sms roamer service, http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/services/convenience-and-security/calling/sms-roamer

Connect to internet via wifi, where available...no nasty data surprises when you back in the country.

I would disable the mobile network on your phone when you get there, and just use wifi in your hotel to send whatsapp and emails. There is no way Vodacom can charge you for data while on wifi. Although some of the new phones (from S5 I think) uses wifi and mobile at the same time to improve download speed, but you can turn this off.
