Last night out of the blue my Logitech USB headset just stopped working, this morning I tried my old Plantronics and same thing. I've removed every single USB device from device manager, loaded the latest Intel INF stuff and still no go. Other USB devices work fine and I have not installed any new software or windows updates whatsoever.

Windows XP bleats about:
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it.

I'm not keen to reinstall XP and Windows 7 is not an option as I still have not finished Thief 2.

Have you tried the headset on another machine?

Did you perhaps do a driver update via Windows Updates?

Try just reinstalling your motherboard/chipset drivers.

Hey Hey...

Have you looked in device manager for any ghost USB devices under your Sound, video and game controllers ??
In a command prompt window... type...

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

cd %SystemRoot%\System32

start devmgmt.msc

Then select "show hidden devices" under device manager "View"... look for any "USB Audio" devices, and right click / uninstall each of these.

I have had a Skype USB handset do the same thing from time to time, and the above removal / re-install of the device and driver sorts it out. Sometimes it also required to have the USB audio device driver installed before inserting the cable.

Dunno if it helps... good luck.

You have probably done the following... but here goes... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817900

Kilo, I had a problem with the headset jack in the front of the pc. It kept giving me error reports like the headset was unplugged then plugged in and unplugged again. I got annoyed at it cause of this so I plugged the headset into the rear socket. Is this the same problem?

Wayne !!! How goes it bru !

That is only for USB connected headsets... if yours is a USB headset connected via the front USB, then perhaps yes, but if it is the standard mini jack round thing, then no.

If it is the mini-jack, then there is either a loose connection inside the connector, or there is a kink-thing in the headset cable. If you try another headset / set of speakers in the front jack, does it do the same thing ?

Works fine on the same machine under linux or my laptop running linux. I only have a WinXP partition for the odd game I play now and again.

No, windows updates are disabled and I have not installed any new software in yonks as I only use the XP partition to play the odd game.

I did download and install the latest drivers from Intel for the MB chipset but no go.
