Sounds like you are after a USB FM transmitter. Then the hifi tunes into the signal on the radio.

You should be able to get a USB FM transmitter for like R100.
I think I paid like R150 for mine at The Gadget Shop in some shopping mall in Pretoria/Menlyn.

Thanks for your replies but as I said I am looking for a usb device that sends a stereo signal from the pc to hi fi, not picking up a transmitted broadcast. I already have a TV/Radio dongle that picks up analogue TV and Radio.

That is exactly what we suggested: A USB FM transmitter.

i.e. it transmits (a.k.a sends) audio modulated onto an FM signal, which your hi-fi can pick up by tuning into a radio station. Obviously, you should choose a frequency that no actual radio station is using, or you will have interference.

If this does not suit your requirements, you may want to specify them in more detail.

e.g. if you want a paired transmitter/receiver that you can then connect to the audio in of a hi-fi component, or the quality of FM radio will not be sufficient, you should say so.

You may also want to consider e.g. a bluetooth headset-style device that receives stereo audio, and you may be able to hack it to provide that as an input to your hi-fi. Just check the profile of the device, as not all bluetooth devices do stereo, some are only mono.

Well, you can probably get them by using Take2's Amazon import service (http://more.take2.co.za/usa). Just be aware that most of these are pretty expensive, since you need a paired transmitter and receiver, and most are 2-channel only, designed for music, not home theatre. You are also going to have a drop in audio quality compared to cables, but whether it will be noticeable is unknown. You also might have problems with interference from other wireless devices in the same frequency range.

Once again thanks for the help and replies. I now understand your earlier answers :o. I look forward to finding an available device soon.cheers

Be careful with some of these devices. I have had two which were unsatisfactory because the frequency on which they transmitted drifted, so that the receiver constantly had to be readjusted. The cheapies you typically buy at the traffic lights are very prone to this. I suggest you get an undertaking from the dealer that he will take the unit back if this turns out to be the case.

I hope a lucky find

A local computer shop has found a "Lindy wireless audio transmitter No 20404" for delivery within three weeks. Looks good on their website and in the online manual. Hope I can recommend it to the forum ! :)
