That sounds strange... I used to run Xine on my i386 version of Ubuntu.
Go to Synaptic/Adept (or go to the terminal and type "sudo Synaptic" if you are in Ubuntu or "sudo Adept" in Kubuntu.
Then try installing Xine. But ffmpeg is a must, I'd say. It's the mpeg driver with the least amount of troubles.

thank you froot...i tried what you told me and managed to download the ffmpeg library stuff and then gxine and the dvd plays fine but as soon as i click on play in the main title menu, it comes up with a funny error...somthing about a "expected packet but none found". There is nothing wrong with the disc as it plays fine in windows and on my normal dvd. I suppose it is not a train smash...not really gonna watch dvd's on my laptop...but a bit irritating that it cant play dvd's with Ubuntu. Still love it though lol. Thank you for your help....our newbies with our questions must sound pretty stupid...but you guys on here are great...always willing to lend a hand it makes it a lot easier for somone like me to switch over...much obliged.

PS: Headsore...did you come right with you live cd?

Sometimes we all have problems we cannot solve. I cannot understand why the dvd won't play... have you tried playing another dvd on Ubuntu? I have never had any issues and any issues I might have had usually got sorted with either ffmpeg or VLC...

Always a pleasure helping guys, it's fun.... because we were also there once...

I managed to create a workable dvd. I know this as it worked on my mac. Sure everything will be fine from now. Also my USB problem was solved soon as I ran Ubuntu from the disk rather than parallels. Now just trying to fix my moms computer which doesn't even get past the Intel P4 screen :( BIOS is messed to. Trying to reset it.

Well...i have not run my updates yet...there are over a 100 meg of updates that my system says is available...so perhaps once i have run those it will update some kind of library and will enable my Ubuntu to play DVD's. If not...it is most certainly not a big enough pain to make me switch back to windows :-)

Thanks again froot and if i were to encounter more probs i sure will come back here...even if i dont i will seeing that i find it interesting reading some of the posts and see what is happeing in the world of linux. You never know when you might find a new bit of info. Hope Headsore comes right...i kinda took over his post with my problem. Will check back and see if he managed.

I have 3 PC's and none will boot using USB, so CD is way to go. I tried Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.
For multimedia needs please visit http://medibuntu.org/. Ubuntu 8.10 may give you hard time with adding medibuntu repository - how to do it is explained here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Do not forget:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

at the end. Now you can install medibuntu packages from Synaptec. For playing DVD's you will need libdvdcss2.
Terminal is in top left menu Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal, that bar at the top of the screen.
Something like cmd.exe on Windows.
If it still fails to add medibuntu to repositories - let me know, I will explain how to install packages manually.
