No, it was formatted NTFS which is what I wanted so I saw no need to do anything except start copying large amounts of data (which I also did with the replacement one yesterday).
Incidentally, with the new one, the first 2 times I plugged it in I ALSO got no response and was thinking "here I go again"! But on the 3rd try it was recognised fine and later when I tried it in a second machine it was recognised immediately. But I'll still be very aware of what I'm putting or not putting on it and in future will most definitely aim for loose drives; either to go direct into my microserver or into more robust enclosures so that the drive warranty is not linked to the hunk of plastic surrounding it...!
