Hey Guys,

Need a little bit of assistance, im looking for a new 32GB USB Flash drive for my daily driver in university that stores my projects and all that stuff, im looking for something with max write speeds and read speeds on a USB2.0 interface as the varsity still uses the interface and USB3.0 doesnt make sense for the price.

Looking for something durable that is reliable and solid too really dont like those slide out usbs but if they work and they the best then ill go for one .

Please guys your help and options on this is grealy arrpiciated

Regards

I just bought a 16GB USB3 flash and the speed is insane! I also use it to back up my important files, almost 13GB worth, took 20 min with old, USB2 flash, now like 5 minutes... But yes, if the varsity pcs don't have USB3, the prices jump from USB2 to 3 isn't worth it.

I have a verbatim, it is good, but the casing broke after like a week... Also have a SanDisk, cover still good but extremely slow speed...

USB3 drives are a lot faster, even in USB2 ports, than USB2 drives.

Don't do it!! Flash drives are very unreliable. Buy yourself a 2.5" external hardrive.

If you get a USB3 flash drive you will defiantly get some serious speed. I bought myself the Adata USB3 N005 32GB and it's blazing fast even on a USB2 port it maxes out the speed on the bus at 29mb/sec.

I've also got a cheaper Lexar USB3 16GB that gets around 14mb/sec write and read of 33mb/sec, I got it at Incredible Corruption for about R300 some time back.

Basically what I am saying is you should really consider a USB3 flash drive.

These look good:
kingston DTR30/32GB - R327.00 (read: 70mb, write: 30mb/sec) - Not sure if this is for USB3.0 or USB2.0 port.
Kingston DTE30/32GB - R336.00 (read: 30mb, write: 25mb/sec)
ADATA S102 Pro 32Gb - R339.00 (read: 30mb, write: 20mb/sec)

If you want absolute speed then look at these ones:
ADATA N005 32GB - R363.00 (read: 32mb, write: 27mb/sec) - Tested myself on a USB2.0 port.
Kingston DTU30G2/32GB - R458.00 (read: 30mb, write: 30mb/sec)

The read and write speeds listed above are what is specified on the product pages of the products to be the speeds on a USB 2.0 port.

I personally consider the slide out design to be the best.

This seems to be the fastest USB 2.0 flash drive: Transcend JetFlash600, 32GB - R268.00 (read: 32mb, write: 12mb/sec)

Since when? I've been using them for years and next lost any data.

Well good for you. Fortunately ( or unfortunately ) I am exposed daily to hundreds of IT users, ranging from total noobs to the more experienced and they have all had flash drives issues with data loss, corruption of data and plain and simple mulfunction...much more than what is experienced with a hard drive scenario.

Rather get: WD 500GB Elements 2.5" Also USB3 and 468GB more for just R220 more. And it won't get lost like 99% of Flash drives out there. Worse than socks....

A mechanical hard drive? How could that possible be more reliable?

As per NomNom I have this one and can vouch for the speed on USB 2 being nice and fast:

Kingston DTU30G2/32GB

No offence, but that doesn't mean much.
I'm willing to bet that a far larger percentage of the people you deal with have flash drives than portable HDDs, which would explain why you see more problems with them.

No way mechanical drives are more reliable. I have a friend at one of the major suppliers and they keep track of warranty claims. Close to 15% of portable drives come back during the warranty period. Flash drives are less than 0.5%.

The device is meant to be on a key chain and all I would have looked for a hard drive if it fitted as well in my life as a usb did but for hard drive terms iv got one and I just don't like to carry it around all the time

Thanks for everyone's replies thus far :D
