My friends flash drive will not work any more.
When inserted Windows finds it, but cannot access it, it says "Please insert a disk into drive F" when you click on it.
I tried to format it but it won't format and I tried assigning a different drive letter to it and also will not work.

I don't have international so I can't Google. I did Bing, but only found one site that worked on local, and it didn't help.
Will try it on my Linux Distro tomorrow, but just thought I'd ask so long.

Anyone encountered this before?

Try a Linux based LiveDVD/CD. Autorun scripts doesn't work on it, and you might be able to see more info in the log file*.

* /var/log/messages, /var/log/dmesg

What would I need to look for in the log file?
I have a live session of Ubuntu running, but there is alot of text in the log file.
Should I paste it all here anyway?

Thanks

Try the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. You'll just need international to get it, though.

I tried that and it also says "There is no media in the specific device".
Guessing it's beyond repair.

Here try this app, always works for me. Flash Disinfector

Click

Thanks, but it still does the same thing. Probably circuits or something have gone inside, so it does recognise the drive, just cant read it.
Will give up, thanks all :)

I've also seen this with my old Sahara 1GB stick - I used Microsoft Security Essentials to remove an autorun virus (seems to be the only AV that permanently removes it) and it was fine for about a week, then it did the same thing - checked autorun virus again and nothing found - I think the stick is now dead... so I replaced it! :p

I get this all the time, in your windows explorer go to the address bar and just type f:\ and press enter, works wonders for me.

Try and use this program "driver magician 3". It will identify you`re driver signature and you could search(on any search engines.) for the driver.

The "Please insert a disk" error is usually due to one of two things: a) An autorun.inf virus infection or b) The NAND chip is damaged or disconnected from the on-board mass storage controller which is nearly impossible to fix.
