hello,
this is a copy and paste of my thread here http://www.neology.co.za/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6

sorry if this stuff has been asked before, and thanks

i unfortunately am using an ipwireless based isp and want to setup a linux based firewall out of an old pc such as smoothwall as i am sick of relying on my other xp machine as the host and firewall.
now i know therodent has written usb drivers for linux and they only support version 2.6 kernels, which is fair enough.
so my first thought was smoothwall but it uses the 2.4 kernel and i noticed the new beta smoothwall 3 express is based on 2.6 kernel
so any idea how i can add support for the usb drivers to this by recompiling the kernel or whatever?
or is there another good firewall distro i can use?
what are my options?

btw i'm from north queensland, australia in a regional area called townsville..
the ISP is iQconnect and they have been around since early 2005
they are evil and here is their website
http://www.iqconnect.net.au/

thank you

just noticed the drivers are for P1C whereas i have the P1D
damn, just have to further complicate things don't they...

Sorry, but the drivers are for 2.6 only :(

The latest alpha release of Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org/about/release/3.0-alpha.html) runs on kernel 2.6. (The driver has been included in the stock kernel since 2.6.12). Perhaps this smoothwall version supports the IPW modem?

The P1C/P1D modems are the same as far as the USB device is concerned, so no worries there. 2.4/2.6 is the problem, and quite frankly I canna be arsed to backport the drivers to 2.4.

thanks rodent, and as i said it's fair enough you've moved on to 2.6, can't blame you
so the smoothwall 3.0 alpha uses the kernel version 2.6.12.4, but of course isn't your standard linux distro
since it's a cut down version it looks like ipw drivers didn't make it?
and since this is a beta it doesn't look like the source for it is being released yet
maybe if i bitch to somebody in the smoothwall forums they'll add it
keep in mind i have no idea what i'm on about

thanks
