I use my N95 frequently as a USB modem. I always had the modem settings (as in Control Panel > Network Connections > Dial Up > Phone# or Host Address) set as *99#.

Now I am told that the numbers connect as follows:

*99# - GPRS / EDGE only
*99***02# - 3G or lower speed connection
*99***03# - 3.5G / HSDPA or lower speed connection

Can anyone confirm these settings. I currently use the *99***03#, and all seems OK. But is it beneficial, speed-wise, versus just the *99# setting?

By whom were you told this?

The number after the *** is normally an index selecting which stored profile (APN, username, password, etc) on your mobile mobile to use for establishing the connection. For example, *99***02# will connect using your 2nd stored profile, whatever that may be. *99# on it's own uses the default stored profile.

On the Nokia N95 you can set your connection type under Tools/Settings/Phone/Network. GSM forces GPRS or EDGE, UMTS forces 3G or HSDPA, Dual Mode uses 3G or HSDPA if available, otherwise drops down to GPRS or EDGE. You can enable or disable HSDPA under Tools/Settings/Connection/Packet Data/High speed packet access. These settings are global, I don't know of a way of setting the connection type per stored profile.

I had issues with my laptop after installing updates to Symantec - it messed up my modem settings for some reason. My IT guy brought a mate of his in to help out, and he's the guy that told me about the various settings.

So - question ...was he correct, or will just the usual *99# give me 3.5G on my N95? (Assuming of course I've selected dual mode on the phone, and MTN actually can deliver the 3.5G speeds)
