Is it possible to use the USB modem (with a sim card inserted) to get access to 3G on MTN/Vodacom ?

The Sentech/IPWireless modem is not 3G compliant. You cannot use it on a regular cellular network.

Yes.

I got one of these BandRich HSDPA card http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=144554

It's an Express Card that comes with a USB adapter, so I'm all set for when I upgrade my notebook, and I can still use it on my desktop.

It works just great - speed of around 1.4 Mbps in PE now that MTN have sorted out their recent problems.

Seeing we're in the MyWireless forum , one would assume the modem in question is the Sentech one

The SIM card slot on the MyWireless modem is designed for those countries where there are multiple IPWireless network providers. This is not the case in SA - there is only 1 (ie Sentech). So the SIM card slot is not for Vodacom/MTN.
