Good day all

The last few days I have been having a nightmare WRT to my PC.
First the USB port my cannon scanner is attached to would not work. I re-installed the drivers, then uninstalled and re-installed, disabled - re-enabled etc, but it would just not recognise the port. So I left it.

Now this morning the port connecting my telscum modem would not be recognised, so I followed the same process, no luck, rebooted twice, no luck, and then suddenly it connected.

Anyone have an idea on what could cause this?

My PC is 2 years old, P4, 1GB RAM, 360GB HDD - WINxp PRO with latest SP's.

Thanks in advance

Open the case and check for any swollen caps.

On the non-functional USB ports, does anything happen if you insert an USB memory stick?

Thanks - I'll try that, cant open it right now.

I did try my USB mem stick and it picked that up, but when I plug my scanner in, doesn't recognise it still.

Do the ports work if you only have one USB device connected to the machine at a time? I have had problems with HP desktops like this - only one device at a time - and had to buy a USB add-on card to resolve it.

No, I have a few connected, plus myHP 1955 screen has a USB port whichis connected to the PC via one of its available ports.
Its worked fin for well over a year now.

You dont think it could be hardware related, the ports themselves?

well also check power consumption.Your atx power supply might not give enough amps for your motherboard usb slots.I had a power problem like that.

I have found out some more info about my USB problem.

It seems that ever since I have run the telkom self-install for their ADSL modem, this has somehow either corrupted the port/driver for my scanner, or even over-written it.

(Just an aside, have you seen the spelling mistake in the main screen for their install programme? )

Anyway, if I logon to my XP PC under any other name than that for which the modem was installed, my scanner works.

I dont know too much about this, so forgive my ignorance. When I go to the hardware device manager, and check the IRQ's for the USB ports, there are two ports using the same IRQ (16) - this doesnt look right does it?

I have tried everything possible WRT my scanner. Totally uninstalled it, unplugged it, rebooted it to let windows refresh its Hardware list, then plugged in again, rebooted - run through the usual process, even do a Hardware scan for changes, point it to my scanner install CD for the relevant drivers, but nothing works.

My modem is connected via USB of course and I know it does have the option of connecting via ethernet - I'll try this next.

Whenever I try and use the scanner, it says: "Unable to open TWAIN source".
