Hi all,

I have a desktop pc and not all the USB ports are working. I have my keyboard, mouse and a scanner plugged in and is 100%.

As soon as I plug in a flashdrive or an external harddrive, it says the usb is not recognised.

Under Device Manager, those USB ports show there is a problem and is not working.
I tried:-
- Unistalling the USB ports and "scanning for hardware changes"
- Checking for Updated Drivers and it says that I already haev the latest drivers
........ yet, it's still doesn't work properly.

What could the problem and / or where can I search / obtain a solution?

Thanks all.

Heinz

Ok here's a longshot but only for the external hdd issue. One one of my PC's the power to the USB was disabled causing the external hard drive not to spin up. I fixed this by setting the jumpers in the on position on "power on usb". I suggest consulting you motherboard manufacturers manual and then check the usb jumper options.

That is driver related, i have had the same problem with my current pc. Usb ports works when they want to, and after removing the flash drive and reinserting it, device not recognized. Problems went away when i upgraded to win7 though.
Best bet is to try updating your mainboard drivers from the manufaturers website

Unplug all the connections/cable from the computer, especially the power, leave it for a couple minutes. Then try again.

Sounds like static (ESD) issues, try to discharge the system, if that doesn't work, it could be physical damage caused by ESD, but, boot a live distro, such as ubuntu, just to make 100% sure.

Using a live distro, will remove the possibility of driver issues, or software/OS problems.

Not all USB ports are capable of supplying sufficient power for a disk drive. Normally the rear ports can, while the front ports not.

Try pugging the disk into each of the ports, rear first, and see if it works.
