My USB ports have been giving me issues. Only recognizing my external HDD if it is plugged in before i turn on the PC. Then i can access files/folders no problem. Once i start transferring it gives me an error saying the destination cannot be found and disconnects. Pulling it out and plugging it back in doesn't do anything, still not recognized. I did google it saw a post that said i should disallow the PC to put USB devises into low power mode but it hasn't helped. I tested the HDD with another PC works no problem. tried multiple ports on the PC all the same.maybe a BIOS setting? anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Odd. I assume it worked previously.
Reset your BIOS settings to the default values and see if it works.
You should also use USB 2.0 or higher.

It may be a power issue to the HDD. In that case a Y-USB might help. The Y-cable plugs into 2 ports on the PC and the HDD plugs into the other end.

tried the actual motherboard usb and seems to be working. looks like you were right...it is power. Shouldnt the front usb 3s on a case be able to handle a external hdd? is my case broken?

USB 2.0 provides a higher current than USB 1.0. USB 3.0 allows for an even higher current.
Chances are the usb ports on the case don't provide enough power for the external HDD. In this case the Y-cable will probably work.

Some front usb does not like external hard drives , mostly due to the thin cable used
