USB recognition issues with the Huawei E1750 Modem

I took out an MTN Data contract in October last year and took an E1750 Modem.

I had issues with it, so I sent it in to the service center. It took 6 weeks but they exchanged it for a new one.

I just got it back yesterday, and this one is doing exactly the same thing: When plugging it into my PC it either:

  • Randomly disconnects and reconnects itself repeatedly
  • Win 7 returns an error "USB device not recognised"
  • After plugging it into several different usb slots it eventually is recognised, and manages a connection.
  • During a connection, the USB stick randomly disconnects itself from the PC, and then won't re-connect - this usually requires a restart of the PC.

I have tried the stick in 3 different machines - one with Win XP SP2, Win 7 Basic 64bit and Win home premium 64bit. I have also tried it in my 3g router and get the same sort of behaviour.

The chances of 2 modems having exactly the same fault and going to exactly the same customer seem slim. Has anyone experienced similar issues with this modem?

I also have an older E170 which works like a charm in all my machines and the router.

Any advice or help would be appreciated here. I'm at a complete loss.

Lol - thats what the MTN technician asked me on the phone this morning. I didn't note the serial number of the original unit, but the one that came back was sealed inside its box - so I assume so yes. The feedback from the service job was that the unit I sent in was faulty, and they confirmed it was exchanged.

Have spoken to them this morning - am waiting on a callback from the call center at 1555 - they've said they will speak to the service center about giving me a loan modem while this one goes in (again).

I live in hope.

I Have a customer with the same modem they bought last year October. MTN technicians updated the firmware and still the modem disconnects. I am going to download the VMC software from Vodafone and see if that program works. I did a similar thing with Vodacom E1820 modem and the VMC program worked much better than the Mobile Connect program. I will let you know if it works.

You could DL the huawei firmware & then use their(hauwei) connection pannel. Just remember to remove the sim prior to starting the firmware update.
