Mate just dropped his laptop off with me as his cellc speedstick is no longer picked up. I noticed the same happens with usb memory sticks but a usb wireless mouse works fine. Windows 7 32-bit

When you insert a 3g dongle or memory stick you get the sound from windows as you normally would but there's no popup asking you if you want to browse the device etc, it also does not appear in windows explorer. It does however appear in device manager and it also pops up under Devices & Printers in Control Panel but it's under Unspecified category and not in the Devices category where it should be.

Any ideas?

I've looked at this so far http://superuser.com/questions/369888/windows-7-professional-doesnt-mount-my-usb-flash-drive-anymore

Clicking on the devices in the unspecified category and selecting troubleshoot seem to be installing drivers for them and then they seem to work fine. I'll have to double check after a reboot.

How many USB sticks have you tried? Are you sure the modem has not just been mode switched

Every single USB stick (4) did the same thing. Modem works just fine on my two linux PCs. How would one check to see if it is mode switched? Huawei E1752.

After a reboot the issue still seems to be there.

All USB mem sticks are now working.

3G dongle goes through the same schlep of install device drivers for the huawei usb enumerator, 3g part and a slew of other things after which the 3g dongle works but only in the one port and not the other. Other one says device not found or busy.

It is best to sometimes remove all the USB port settings & configurations that have accumulated over time and start afresh.

Best method is to boot into "Safe Mode", go to device manager and remove all USB devices, Hubs & Roots. Then let the system pick them up again like a fresh install.
Make sure you are connected to the internet for the automatic downloading of up to date drivers, etc.

Another very useful utility us the one below where you can selectively view & troubleshoot problem USB devices.

Same thing happened to my dad's laptop. Did a Windows Repair and all sorted.

I think MDMA can check that. Are you comfortable throwing AT commands at the modem?

It's ok thx. modem is fine, it's a windows issue. I got the fekking thing working now on both usb ports by using a dialup connection, the cell c software only recognises the thing in one port.

Think this laptop is due for a format & reinstall anyway, but not now.

EDIT: Only works in one of the ports for both dialup connection & cell c software.

Deleting the INFCACHE.1 file will pretty much do the same thing. It starts from scratch after that. with the 3G dongle I had to insert it several times before it finally installed all the associated drivers for it via the net. Got there eventually.
