I want to know what to do about the following situation. My internet keeps dropping. I'm on uncapped 512kb/s.

My internet is slower than dialup @ 48Kb/s. When I use another account our internet. I've phoned Internet Solutions for about 3 months already but every time they tell me that its a line fault. I tried another account and not 1 time in 2 weeks did the connection dropped but as soon as I plug in the Internet Solutions router it drops back to slower speeds. I have 4Mb/s line and 512Kb/s internet

I think Internet Solutions really don't give a dam. Any suggestions please.

from what i can decipher-

your problem is that your package is slower than your line speed if you want 4mbs throughput your package should be the same speed - not to mention that IS's FakeUncapped is throttled and riddled with slowness.

Happens to us too.
IS blames Telkom for the drops, but the line never drops if we use another modem+account.

IS uncapped is bloody useless.

Run a constant:

ping ftp.is.co.za -t

See if you lose packets of data or what the latency is when you run it for an hour.

no not getting confused. ping to ftp.is.co.za -t is bytes=32 time = 15-32 TTL=59. and bekdik you sound just like IS now.

ok I'm getting time out pinging to that address every now and then

Necuno my speed should be 512Kb/s but in steads its 48Kb/s most of the time. I cant even open www.google.co.za

Moederloos how did you fix the problem

rwenzori not getting confused. line is messured Kb/s and download a file in KB/s

confused, you have a 4meg line and a 512K uncapped account correct ?

yes correct. I know the speed will be 512k and not 4meg cause of IS capping it at 512k

ok but still I only get about 40kbs and not 400kbs thats 10 times slower

IS gave me a Billion router

I use a D-link router
Mmm ... the D-Link probably uses a TI DSL chipset vs. the Billion's Conexant. I believe the Conexant struggles to maintain good sync on some of the newer DSLAM models Telkom are using (esp. @ 4Mbps).

If you're on one of the more expensive fibre products, I would push IS to provide you with another make of router (even if temporaily) to make sure once and for all. Otherwise bug them for newer Billion firmware, that possibly has better performance.

ok thanks. But don't IS only give billion and no other brand? I will phone them today and ask them if we can have another brand router. Will also ask them to reset the port

As far as I know IS replaced their Cisco devices with the Billion, and I don't think they offer any other brand. I suspect that a port recreate will help/solve your problem..
