How important is having ssl enabled , currently only using local is news for all my stuff as they seem to have the latest cached and no ssl support on is news servers?

SSL is just encryption. it allows you to hide what you are downloading. Apparently the ISP can't even see what you are downloading.
Some People use it to bypass throttling but I'm not sure how effective that is. I just like the privacy of it.

Is this info still up to date? How the heck do these things work - haven't been able to find anything I'd like to watch as yet. Is there is still invites open to NZBSA?
