I've heard people mention on these forums about how good IS news server is.

I'm currently still on dialup and waiting for ADSL. Was with ABSA, canceled them when Telkom did line test and said that I will get ADSL in 3 weeks. BIG mistake. Now I temporarily signed up with NetLab. Found a vast difirance in the retention of ABSA news server and NetLabs News server.

My question. On ADSL does each ISP have there own news server or do you only get the use of the big IS server or SIAX's one?

What is the retention for both binaries and text on IS and SIAX respectively?

Still trying to make up my mind wich ISP I should use, so I'm trying to get as much info as I can while I'm waiting for Telkom.

PS. If I undertake to not use the internet at all till telkom install ADSL, do you think the few hundred rand [dialup costs] less in their pocket will urge them to get it done quicker. I don't think so. :(

If you signup with a IS reseller you get access to the IS news server - same goes with saix though from what I understand their retention doesnt even hold a candle to IS'.

I'm not on IS but if your keen to use usenet then I'd suggest at least getting one of their accounts for the sole purpose of the 30gb local cap which of course can be used to access their news server. I'm relegated to using an international news server but if you're limited to a 3gb its not going to be worth it IMO.

Check out openweb - I think think they have some of the better priced packages. You'll get 3gb international/local to start off followed by an additional 27gb local-only once that initial 3gb is used up.

Retention on the IS server is excellent, I've downloaded files that were sometimes 2 to 3 months old. If you're going to be getting alot of content from the newsgroups then go for an IS account. You can get anything and that 30 gigs local really comes in handy after you get capped internationally. If you're going to be using the newsgroups occasionally and will be getting most of your content from overseas then get an SAIX account.

IS's news server has 70-day retention, the same as GigaNews (where IS route their stuff from)

The SAIX news server is useless. Retention of 2 to 3 days and 6 out of every 7 posts not there. Don't go with them.

Have you tried groups.google.com? I haven't used it too much, so wont be able to give you retention time, but maybe that is another option?

IS news server = very good
SAIX = about what you would expect from Telkom.
