Anyone know a way I can use an email as a trigger ? Basically my inverter sends a mail to my email saying the grid is down.

I want to use this email to trigger a lamp

If you're running Home Assistant you can use the IMAP integration.

But I already showed you how in the other thread?

Your question is too wide open anyway as it all depends on the platform of the lamp.

Have you physically tried it?

The email, from what I saw, comes through and you have to open the email AND run the ‘automation’ manually. That’s hardly an automation .

The question is quite simple and regarding the platform, I’ll get anything that works. I’m not investing in a whole other ecosystem - it’s a single bulb or plug or anything that works. Could be HomeKit, EWeLink, Tuya, Shelly or anything out there.

The biggest issue is not iOS not automatically running the automation

You really need to apply yourself just a little instead of expecting everything on a platter.

Nope, I use a real smart home system.

But I’ll go through all the effort of doing it for you.
Can you real home system trigger via push notification ? You said that HA would battle

In the case of HA you’d have the inverter talk directly to it and report its status.

So HA would send you the notification or trigger the action directly so there no need for email or push notifications as a trigger.

Inverter (Trigger) > HA (Automation) > Action (Turn on light or announce on Alexa etc)

The way I do it is have HA turn off my CBI Astute Smart Plug attached to my aircon when the inverter has grid loss.

That way the light changes to not blinking. When grid returns it goes back to blinking but my aircon also beeps which tells everyone power is back on.

Of course I have a lot of other things also turn back on like tumble dryer etc which sometimes is a giveaway and I have a Dashboard in my kitchen where anyone can check the current status.

As for Shortcuts I can’t get the bloody thing to trigger at all, never mind being asked to run but I’m on iOS17 Beta on everything. I’ll try it on my Mac later.

Which email system? Outlook365? Gmail?

@Dolby I do really think you should just bite the bullet and get into HA and get it over with.

You’ve wasted so much time and effort trying to avoid it that you have far exceeded the time and effort it will take to just get HA going.

And once you have HA going you won’t look back as it will address every single possible idea you’ve ever had.

Can’t reply to the long post above on my phone - but guessing that I need dedicated hardware to start? I’m sure that’s what put me off (as well as reading about the learning and things that keep breaking)

But if the inverter connects direct to it, perhaps I look into it again.

I mean any old piece of hardware can do it, but most people start with a Pi as that was where it was originally conceived.

What inverter do you have again?

I’ve been trying to follow your threads with interest but am on vacation so not exactly up to date, so apologies if this has been asked before. So just wondering, do you have the whole house covered or do you have some items which aren’t on the inverter such as oven or geyser?

For example my oven is not on the inverter so the clock tells us whether there is load shedding or not. But would it be possible to find an appliance or item not on the inverter and plug in or otherwise attach a lamp to the socket?

It doesn’t have to be, you can run it virtually on something else but ideally it needs to be online 24/7.

Victron is apparently very easy to integrate but haven’t done it myself.
