Hi guys

So my brother and I both want to have our own ISP accounts at the house. He wants to use Telkom and I want to use Afrihost. I can't get him to change his mind so I was wondering if anyone could walk me through the process of using both accounts on one router. We have a Netgear DG834.

I've checked everywhere that I could to find some sort of walkthrough but found nothing.

Thanks in advance for the help. :)

Set router to Bridge mode.

Dial PPPOE connections on individual computers.

Alright thanks man. I'll try that when I get home. Will it affect our bandwidth in any way compared to both of us using the same account? And is there any way to lock him out so that he doesn't tap in?

Either way its going to be your line speed split between the 2 of you, you can take into account things like if 1 account is shaped and the other is unshaped, the unshaped account will have higher DL speeds and this will effect the other person. I highly doubt it though.

You could always limit him on the router using his mac address.

Ya his account will be shaped and I think his line is 2mb whereas Afrihost says our max line speed is 10mb/s. So will that limit mine to a max of 2mb as well? Sorry for all the dumb questions, I'm not too clued up with this. Always used a dongle.

Your line speed is 10MB?

He has a 2MB account? What account do you have?

According to Afrihost's ADSL line check on their website, it says that the lines at our home can run a max of 10mb/s. Ya my bro has the 2mb uncapped from Telkom.

Afrihost doesn't specify on their capped packages what speed they provide. All they say is "1 The speed of your connection is dependent on the speed of your Telkom DSL Line. Up to 40Mbps supported."

The package I have is:

https://www.afrihost.com/site/product/adsl_capped?src=website_nav (The 50+50GB one).

Get a Mikrotik router and do it at the router level. Initiate the 2 PPPOE sessions from the router, then assign each PC on the network a static IP address and route each PC's internet connection through the respective PPPOE session.

Instead of buying a whole new router, I've heard that I can convert the router into a simple ADSL modem. Would this help?

No, you need a decent router like a Mikrotik router to do what you want to do properly. You will still need an ADSL modem to connect to the router to as well. Mikrotik routers can be got for as little as R600 so it's pretty cheap.

MIKROTIK... making PPPOE off a PC is just sad guys come on.

I make one PPPOE for my media pc that is an uncapped account. my laptop/phones and fathers stuff all on a capped account.

make pre routing and route masks and boom boom pow. easy dude easy.

I've heard that you can assign specific accounts to certain MAC addresses on a network. I think Woodlands said you can do it with pfSense but I'm not sure.

You can do something like this on pfSense (or most firewalls for that matter), but not exactly using the MAC address. You can route traffic through a certain gateway based on IP address. You can assign a specific IP address to a workstation using its MAC address through the DHCP server, then do it that way.
